Student Activist Rashid Esmaili Arrested in Esfahan

HRANA News Agency – student activist Rashid Esmaili has been arrested by security forces in Esfahan. Esmaili, an executive member of the student group Tahkim-e Vahdat, was arrested on Saturday September 8 without an arrest warrant.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Esmaili was first arrested in December of 2009 while he was undergoing cancer treatment. He was banned from graduate studies in human rights at Allameh University and in recent months was involved in journalistic activities with various websites.

His mother told that Esmaili will be held by the Revolutionary Guards Security branch until his interrogation is complete.

 

 

Blogger Rojin Mohammadi Suffering in Ward 2A, Evin Prison

HRANA News Agency – Imprisoned blogger and medical student, Rojin Mohammadi, has been locked up in Ward 2A of Evin Prison under appalling conditions.This ward is under the control of Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC).

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Rojin Mohammadi contacted her family briefly by phone and informed them of her nervous convulsions and migraine headaches in prison.Rojin Mohammadi’s current condition is the direct result of her incarceration and pressures exerted by the interrogators in order to force her to confess and accept charges filed against her.
Iranian authorities have charged Rojin Mohammadi with the crimes of propaganda against the regime and inciting public opinion by the means of human rights activism.Meanwhile, intelligence agents have been pressuring Rojin Mohammadi’s family not to broadcast the news of her condition.Rojin Mohammadi’s brother was also summoned to Shahid Moghadasi Court in Evin Prison and threatened.
Rojin Mohammadi was initially arrested on November 14, 2011 upon her arrival at Imam Khomeini Airport but and subsequently released after posting bail.She was finally arrested again on November 23, 2011 and locked up behind bars in Evin Prison.

Appeals Court Upheld Heavy Prison Terms for Labor Activists in Tabriz

HRANA News Agency – The Appeals Court has upheld heavy prison sentences issued for four leftist labor activists from Tabriz, East Azerbaijan Province.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the sixth branch of the Appeals Court in East Azerbaijan Province upheld the verdicts against Shahrokh Zamani, Nima Pouryaghob, Mohammad Jarahi and Sasan Vahebivash.

On August 18, 2011, the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Tabriz sentenced Shahrokh Zamani to 11 years, Nima Pouryaghob to 6 years, Mohammad Jarahi to 5 years and Sasan Vahebivash to 6 months in prison.A fifth defender, Buick Sydler, was found not guilty.Charges against these labor activists included organizing opposition groups, acting against national security and propaganda against the regime.

Nima Pouryaghob is studying mechanical engineering and Sasan Vahebivash is majoring in biomedical engineering at Tabriz Azad University.Shahrokh Zamani is a member of the Representatives’ Council in the Coordinating Committee to Create Labor Organizations and also a member of the Painters Union.Mohammad Jarahi is a labor activist.Although Shahrokh Zamani was unable to post his heavy bail for a while, all four labor activists are currently free on bail.

The verdicts issued against these political activists are unprecedented in Tabriz in the recent few years.

Beaten Because I Stopped Using Drugs

HRANA News Agency – On Thursday, June 23, 2011, the police beat and battered a citizen in one of the parks in Tehran Pars, an eastern neighborhood of Tehran metropolitan area.

According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), while the implementation of the Moral Security Plan is in progress throughout Iran, law enforcement officers beat a citizen because he told them that he was a recovering addict.HRANA is protecting this citizen’s identity.

In an interview with HRANA, this individual said, “Yesterday, when I was sitting on one of the benches in the park and just looked at the police officers, they approached me and in a condescending voice asked, ‘What are you looking at?’Then they took me to the police mobile command center where they gave me a full body search.”

“The police officers asked me what drug I was using. I replied that I no longer used any drugs.When they heard my answer, they began shouting and cursing and said that since I had stopped using drugs, I had to be beaten.Then they began beating me,” he added.

This report contains two pictures of this citizen’s legs bruised and injuries when police officers beat him with batons.

 

Azerbaijani Poet, Saeed Moghani, Arrested

HRANA News Agency – This morning, after Iran’s intelligence agents stormed Saeed Morghani’s family house in the village of Yal Sue located in Angoot County in Ardabil Province, he was arrested and taken to an unknown location.

According to a report by Tabriz Post, Saeed Morghani’s family has said that eight intelligence agents raided and searched their house and confiscated documents and personal belongings.

Saeed Morghani is an Azerbaijani poet, journalist and the publisher of Yashmaq Magazine.He has also published numerous books on the literature of Azerbaijan.Before his most recent arrest, Saeed Morghani has been detained by the security forces multiple times and has spent long periods of time in captivity.Currently, there is a case pending against him in Tehran’s Revolutionary Court since he was arrested during Iftar ceremonies, [the evening meal when Muslims break their fast.]

A Father May Kill His Child Without Facing Retribution

HRANA News Agency – Dr. Mostafa Eghlima, the head of Academic Association of Social Workers in Iran, has announced, “The second abused child whose case captured the attention of the public in the last few days was transferred from Mofid Hospital to Amina Nursery.  After a two-day stay at this facility, the child was released to his father in compliance with the judge’s order.”

 

In an interview with Dadna News Agency, Dr. Mostafa Eghlima added, “It is true that according to the law, a father can take the custody of his child at any time with a court order.  By law, even if a father kills his child, he faces no retribution.  However, the law also requires a father’s mental and psychological health to be confirmed by the Medical Examiner before placing the child in his custody.  At first, all the factors which have brought about child abuse must be identified and resolved, and the only group that is qualified to do so is the Welfare Organization.”

 

The head of Academic Association of Social Workers in Iran said, “Has the Medical Examiner confirmed the parents’ psychological and ethical competence before the judge’s order was issued?  Were the documents certifying the parents’ mental and emotional health ready?”

 

Dr. Mostafa Eghlima continued, “No help was given to this child.  There is always the possibility that after returning home, the child will face more punishment for reporting her parent’s abuse and causing problems for them.”

 

Pointing out that in the last month, child abuse cases have increased, Dr. Mostafa Eghlima added, “These are only the cases that social workers have stumbled upon accidently.  Otherwise, there are dozens of other cases that we fail to notice.”

 

Criticizing the emergency division of State Welfare Organization, Dr. Mostafa Eghlima said, “What is the use for establishing the phone center to report child abuse?  When a child contacts the center to report that his father has beaten him, but less than one week, the child is returned to the same father, we haven’t solved this child’s problem.  Instead, we have added to it.”

 

Dr. Mostafa Eghlima explained, “If the State Welfare Organization had supported Haniyeh Zamani’s mother, perhaps, she wouldn’t have to marry a drug addict because of poverty, and today, this child would have another life and future ahead of her.”

 

Dr. Mostafa Eghlima pointed out, “Right now, the government has the custody of abused children and plays the role of a father.  The cost to support a child isn’t $30.00 per month but amounts to $400.00 per month.  How come the government can pay more than $600.00 every month to lock up a thief in jail but can’t afford paying the expenses to take care of these kids?”

 

At the end, Dr. Mostafa Eghlima added, “If we continue on this path and don’t address these issues, social problems increase every day.  We know only about these three cases of child abuse because they have been reported by the media.  There are tens of other cases in the community without being identified.”

 

The Supreme court confirmed a death verdict

HRANA News Agency – Death verdict of a peddler who accused to murder another peddler during a quarrel for the place of business, has been confirmed by supreme court.

According to a report of Mehr news, on March 8th of 2010, police station No. 101 informed about the quarrel of two peddlers in Tajrish square. When the polices arrived to the reported place, they found out that the peddlers fought each other for the place of their business and in the quarrel Morteza hit Safar’s chest by a screwdriver.

Vahid Asghari’s Death Sentence Was Confirmed/ Case Sent back to the Supreme Court Again

HRANA News Agency– The death sentence of Vahid Asghari which was rejected by the branch six of Supreme Court was confirmed again by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court and referred to the Supreme Court.
According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Vahid Asghari is an Iranian blogger and an information technology student who was sentenced to death by the Islamic Republic’s government in 2012. In spite of many problems in his case and lack of his presence in the court, Judge Salavati confirmed his verdict again unlawfully and sent back his case to the Supreme Court.
