Ministry of Intelligence Withholds Details on Death of Yasser Mangouri in Detention Center

On Thursday, September 9, following a call attributed to the Ministry of Intelligence, the family of Yasser Mangouri was informed of his death while he was being held in a detention center.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Mangouri had been arrested by security forces on July 17.

No information has been provided to the family about the details of the death or its date.

Mr. Mangouri is said to had been previously interrogated on charges of “collaborating with an opposition party”.

Yaser Mangouri, a native of Piranshahr in West Azerbaijan Province, was a married father of three. He was also a welding worker.

The security agency has so far refused to return the body of Mr. Mangouri to his family.

 

Azerbaijani Turk Activist Abbas Nikravan Arrested by Security Forces in Salmas

On Sunday, September 5, Azerbaijani Turk activist Abbas Nikravan was arrested by security forces and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Nikravan is a native  of Salmas in West Azerbaijan Province.

Mr. Nikravan has a history of detention. He was arrested in July 2018, during the annual gathering of Babak Castle, and was released on bail a week later.

As of this writing, no information is available on the reasons for his detention, the charges against him, or his whereabouts.

Suspected Criminals in Naqadeh in West Azerbaijan Province Humiliated by Police

On Saturday, August 28, police humiliated three suspected criminals in the middle of the streets in Naqadeh on the order of Rasoul No’ei, the prosecutor of Naqadeh City.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, this action is contrary to the conventions on human rights, domestic law, and human dignity.

The citizens had been arrested on charges of harassment, disturbing public security, and damaging vehicles.

Two Citizens Detained by Security Forces in Oshnavieh in West Azerbaijan Province

On Sunday, August 29, two citizens from Oshnavieh were detained by security forces and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, the identities of these citizens are Heydar Alizadeh from the village of Qazanabad, and Shirzad Mamandi a native of Narziveh village in Oshnavieh.

The report states that the arrests were made without a court order, and that security forces searched the homes of detainees, confiscated some of their belongings, including their cell phones.

As of this writing, no information is available on the reasons for the arrests, the charges against them, or the whereabouts of these citizens.

Citizen Detained by Security Forces Without Court Order in Piranshahr

Salah Osmani was arrested by security forces on Tuesday, August 17, and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, 44-year-old Osmani is a resident of the village of Kharapeh in Piranshahr in West Azerbaijan Province,

The report states that Mr. Osmani was arrested without a court order.

As of this writing, the reasons for the arrest and Osmani’s whereabouts are unknown.

Citizen Arrested by Security Forces in Oshnavieh in West Azerbaijan Province

On Monday, August 16th, Sardar Alani was arrested by security forces and taken to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, Sardar Alani is a resident of the village of Singan in the City of Oshnavieh and has a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.

The report quoted an informed source as saying that IRGC intelligence forces detained Mr. Alani at a checkpoint between Singan village and Oshnavieh town without a court order.

As of this writing, no information is available on the reasons behind Alani’s arrest or the charges against him.

Prison Sentence and Ban on Leaving the Country Upheld for Environmental Activist Samko Maroufi

The conviction of Bukan native Samko Maroufi was recently upheld by the Court of Appeals of West Azerbaijan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Center of Democracy and Human Rights in Kurdistan, Samko Maroufi is an environmental activist and member of the Valat Environmental Association. He has previously been arrested and convicted for his activities.

In May of this year, Branch 104 of Bukan County Criminal Court sentenced Mr. Maroufi to one year in prison and a two-year ban from leaving the country on charges of propaganda against the regime.

He was arrested by security forces in Bukan on March 2021 and was released on bail on April 2021.

 

Three Political Prisoners Sentenced to Additional Prison Time and Lashes in Urmia Prison

Political prisoners Nayeb Hajizadeh Yangjeh, Keyhan Mokarram al-Nabi, and Nayeb Askari were sentenced to a new sentence of prison time and flogging in connection with a recently opened case against them.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, the prisoners are currently being held in Urmia Prison in West Azerbaijan Province.

According to Branch 119 of the Criminal Court of Urmia, these prisoners were each sentenced to three months in prison and 50 lashes on a charge of “disrupting the prison order”.

According to HRANA’s report in July, per an informed source, the lawsuit was filed at the request of Urmia Prison Director Amir Sohrabi after several political prisoners protested the beating of Nayeb Hajizadeh by two prisoners accused of violent crimes.

It was said that one of the assailants was also summoned to the court as a witness in the case.

Six Citizens Summoned and Arrested in Oshnavieh in West Azerbaijan Province

On Monday, August 2, two citizens were arrested by security forces and taken to an unknown location in Oshnavieh.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Center of Democracy and Human Rights in Kurdistan, the identities of these citizens are Obaid Anvari, son of Rahim, from the village of Amirabad, and 22-year-old Ribvar Charakdari, son of Mohammad.

According to the report, another citizen named Hassan Shadikhah, a native of Sengan village in Oshnavieh, was summoned by the Oshnavieh Intelligence Office and interrogated for several hours.

The Kurdpa report states that three other citizens were arrested in the county of Oshnavieh besides the above mentioned ones. Kurdpa has identified the detainees as Farhad Maroufi, son of Hassan, from Aliabad village, Rahman Asadi, son of Mahmoud, from Aliabad village, and Jalal Ghaderzadeh, son of Abdollah, from Nalous. As of this writing, no information is available on the whereabouts of the detainees and the charges against them.

Inmates Babak Aslani and Mohsen Isfahani Executed in Urmia Prison

On Sunday, July 18, two prisoners who had previously been sentenced to death for murder were executed in Urmia Prison in West Azerbaijan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, the prisoners have been identified as Babak Aslani and Mohsen Isfahani.

Iran ranks first in the world in citizen executions per capita, according to international organizations. The Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) reported that between January 1 and December 20 of 2020, at least 236 citizens were executed. One of these citizens was executed publicly, and two were juvenile offenders. An additional 95 citizens were sentenced to death.

According to the same report, more than 72% of executions in Iran are not reported by the government or the judiciary, which human rights organizations call “secret” executions.

The execution of Aslani and Isfahani has not been announced by Iranian media or official sources as of this writing.
