Destruction of a Park in Piranshahr Caused Residents’ Protest

HRANA News Agency – Green Space of “Farhang Park” in the city of Piranshahr of Western Azerbaijan province in the wake of disputed claims of ownership of land was demolished on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Following this action the residents protested. So far, authorities have not given any explanation in this regard and it was supposed that citizens would continue their protest on the next days.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), the green space of “Farhang Park” was demolished due to the failure of the city council of Piranshahr and lack of satisfaction of the landowner.

An informed citizen in this neighborhood said to HRANA: “The Park was purchased from the landowner by the city council previously but due to the failure of the city council to do the case completely and formally and also because the case was abandoned in the archives of the court the owner finally won the case.”

This citizen continued: “This happened once but the mayor promised the agreement. But this time regarding the lack of agreement, the green space was destructed.”

It was supposed that the protesters would walk with banners from the Farhang Park to the mayors and governors office at 9 am, on Saturday, May 28, 2016.

It should be noted that Farhang Park of Piranshahr was built in 2002 and after 14 years was damaged through deforestation, destruction of green space, equipment and wall fence.

Another protesting citizens said: “Exactly half of the park with trees, flowers and green space was destroyed. Our question is why the authorities should have allowed this happen? ”

This video shows the scenes of destruction, compared before and after the destruction, as well as the gathering of protestors.
