Two Inmates Executed in Lakan and Zahedan Prisons

On January 29, two inmates on death row were executed in Lakan and Zahedan prisons.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Hossein Kaveh, age 50, who was convicted for murder, was executed in Lakan Prison in Rasht. He had been imprisoned for nine years.

Rasank News Outlet also reported the execution of an inmate identified as Mohammad-Reza Afereydoon, 32 years old, in Zahedan Prison. He was convicted for drug-related crimes and had been in jail since 2017.

None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported these executions at the time of writing.

The most recent report from the Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) states that between January 1 of 2021 and December 20 of 2021, at least 299 citizens, including four juvenile offenders, were executed. In addition, 85 citizens were sentenced to death in this period.

Keyvan Samimi Sent into Exile in Semnan Prison after Successive Relocations

After several relocations between prisons in Tehran and Alborz provinces, Keyvan Samimi, the imprisoned editor of Iran Farda Magazine and a member of the Iranian Writers’ Association, was finally exiled to Semnan Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, by the order of the court, Keyvan Samimi was transferred from Rajai Shahr Prison to Semnan Prison.

Initially, he was sent to Karaj Central Penitentiary Prison and thereafter to Rajai Shahr. However, since the Executive Unit of Karaj refused to accept him for reasons unkown, he was ultimately sent to Semnan Prison.

His lawyer, Mostafa Nili stated that during these relocations, Samimi was not allowed to bring his belongings, even medicines, which he needs urgently due to his health.

Samimi has been serving his two year sentence since December 7, 2020.

On May 1, 2019, he attended the workers’ protests on the anniversary of Labour Day before Parliament. The protest turned violent due to the interference of security forces, leading to his arrest along with dozens of other protestors. On May 12, 2019, security forces raided and searched the Iran Farda magazine office and confiscated many documents, including his computer. On June 17, 2019, he finally was released on bail until the end of legal proceedings.

On April 20, 2020, in a trial in absentia, Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, sentenced him to three years imprisonment on the charge of “assembly and collusion to act against national security”. The verdict was upheld on appeal but was reduced to two years in the retrial.

Samimi has previously served six years in prison in 2009 for questioning the 2009 Presidential Election, participating in protests, and writing articles critical of the Islamic Regime. His two political activist brothers were executed, one by this regime and the other by the former regime.

At Least Seven Teachers Arrested During Nationwide Teacher and Educator Protests

On January 31, at least seven teachers were arrested and transferred to an unidentified location amid nationwide protests of teachers and educators. In response to a call by the Coordination Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, the retired and working teachers and educators protested yesterday and today in numerous cities across the country.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on Monday, January 31, at least seven teachers were arrested and transferred to an unidentified location.

Mohammad Habibi, the spokesperson of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, mentioned on his personal social media that have the following teachers were arrested during the protests: Ali Zahmatkesh, Asghar Amirzadegan and Ghahreman Kiani in Shiraz, Ahmad Heydari, Ahmadi and Davoudi in Tehran, and Jabbar Doosti in Mariwan

Yesterday, Shaaban Mohammadi, a member of the Kurdistan Teachers’ Trade Association was arrested in Mariwan.

Five Citizens Arrested by Security Forces in Piranshahr

On January 29, security forces arrested five citizens in Piranshahar City and transferred them to an unidentified location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Center of Democracy and Human Rights in Kurdistan, Ali Omarpour and Faryad Shilan were violently arrested by security forces. In another security force operation, Ayob Hadisti and Rahman Khedmatgozar were arrested.

Kurdpa reported that on Saturday, another citizen identified as Morad Mame-Rash was arrested by security forces.

In all cases, the security forces did not show an arrest warrant.

The reason for these arrests, the arrestees’ whereabouts and the charges are still unknown at the time of writing.

Diako Tara Imprisoned to Serve Six Month Sentence

On January 26, Diako Tara, resident of Piranshahr City, was imprisoned in Naghadeh Prison to serve his six month sentence.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Center of Democracy and Human Rights in Kurdistan, on Wednesday, Tara was charged for “collaboration with an opposition political party”.

On July 11, 2020, the security forces arrested him in Piranshahr City. He was released on bail on July 23, 2020.

Brothers Dana and Zana Ahmadpour Arrested by Security Forces in Baneh

On January 27, security forces arrested two brothers identified as Dana and Zana Ahmadpour in Baneh City and transferred them to an unidentified location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, security forces raided Dana Ahmadpour’s house and arrested him at their home without an arrest warrant. Thereafter, Zana Ahamadpour was summoned by the Ministry of Intelligence via phone and arrested at his appearance.

The reasons for their arrest and their whereabouts are still unknown at the time of writing.

Keyvan Samimi Sent to Rajai Shahr Prison after Successive Relocations

Keyvan Samimi, editor of Iran Farda Magazine and a member of the Iranian Writers’ Association was transferred to the quarantine zone of Rajai Shahr prison. Earlier, he had been relocated from Evin Prison to Karaj Central Penitentiary Prison. Last Wednesday, he was sent back to Evin Prison and the day after had to move out again.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Samimi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili stated Thursday on his personal social media that “A few hours ago, Mr. Samimi called and informed [me] that on Tuesday, after the executive unit of Karaj refused to accept him to one of the prisons in Alborz Province, he was transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison and currently is being held in the quarantine zone.”

As mentioned by his lawyer, the reason for these successive relocations is that the Executive Unit of Karaj countermanded the orders of the Executive Unit Moghaddas and Branch 54 of the Revolutionary Court for the relocation of Samimi to Karaj Central Penitentiary Prison.

Inmate Executed in Urmia Prison for Drug-Related Crime

On January 27, an inmate on death row who was previously convicted for drug-related crimes was executed in Urmia Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on Thursday, January 27, 2022, the inmate was identified as Mirsoltan Amiri, a resident of Oshnavieh City.

On July 3, 2021, Amiri’s son, Shahria Amiri, was executed in the same prison for a similar crime.

This execution has not yet been announced by judicial officials or reported by media inside Iran.

Azerbaijani Turk Activist Mohammad Aini Arrested in Rasht City

On January 23, Azerbaijani Turk activist Mohammad Aini was arrested after an appearance at the Ministry of Intelligence Office in Rasht City. After, he was transferred to an unidentified location. He was summoned by the Ministry of Intelligence the day before the arrest.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, security and judicial officials have not provided his family with any information about his whereabouts or the reason for his arrest.

Aini has faced other arrests. In October of 2020, amid the widespread protests in the Azerbaijani regions in the Western part of the country, he was arrested in Rasht City. After some time, he was released from jail on bail. In February of 2021, he was tried by Branch 12 of the Revolutionary Court of Rasht on the charge of “acting against national security” and was finally acquitted.

Tohidi, Mohammad Iran-Nejad and Sara Askari Fined, Sentenced to Imprisonment

Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced Yashar Tohidi, Mohammad Iran-Nejad and Sara Askari, all residents of Tehran, to more than seven years of imprisonment combined, as well as a fine.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Tohidi and Iran-Nejad were each sentenced to three years and five months in prison on charges of “acting against national security through membership in one of the Marxist groups” and “propaganda against the regime”. If this verdict is upheld, the severest punishment of two years and nine months on the charge of “acting against national security through membership in a Marxist group” is enforceable per Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code.

Askari has also been sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of 7,000,000 tomans on the charge of “spreading lies”. Her sentence has been suspended for five years.

The trial against these citizens was held on January 17, 2022.

On June 23, 2021, security forces arrested Tohifi and transferred him to the IRGC-controlled Ward 2-A in Evin Prison. After 12 days of interrogation, he was released on bail of 500 million tomans until the end of legal proceedings.

Iran-Nejad and Tohidi have already faced other arrests and convictions in their rap sheets.
