Drug-Related Charges: 6 Prisoners Executed in Zahedan Prison

HRANA– At dawn on Sunday, July 20, the death sentences of six prisoners previously convicted on drug-related charges were carried out in Zahedan Prison.

According to HRANA, citing Haal Vsh, six prisoners were executed today, Sunday, July 20, 2025, in Zahedan Prison. The identities of three of these prisoners have been confirmed as:

  • Abdoljalil Darkzahi, approximately 35 years old, married, from and residing in Chah-Ahmad village, Taftan County.

  • Nematollah Shahnawazi, married, from and residing in Khash County.

  • Dariush Shahbakhsh (also known as Abdolnasir), 24 years old, married, from and residing in Golchah village, part of the Kurin District of Zahedan.

According to the report, Darkzahi, Shahnawazi, and Shahbakhsh were arrested in separate cases about four years ago on drug-related charges and were later sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court in Zahedan. The report does not mention the identities of the other three prisoners.

As of the time of this report, prison authorities and relevant institutions have not officially announced these executions.

According to HRANA’s report, in 2024, over 52 percent of executed prisoners had been convicted on drug-related charges. Over the past ten years, individuals convicted of drug trafficking have accounted for 40 percent of all executions. Unfortunately, HRANA’s statistics show no progress in reducing executions for drug-related offenses.

Three Citizens Arrested by Security Forces in Khash

HRANA News Agency – Mahmoud Shahnawazi, Mehrab Shahnawazi, and Jaber Shahnawazi, residents of Khash County, were arrested yesterday by security forces in this county and transferred to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, citing the Baloch Activists Campaign, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, three citizens were detained in Khash County. The identities of the detainees have been reported as, Mahmoud Shahnawazi, approximately 30 years old, married and father of two children, Mehrab Shahnawazi, and Jaber Shahnawazi.

All three are residents of the village of Eslamabad, a district of Khash County, Sistan and Baluchestan province.

No information is available yet regarding their whereabouts or the reasons for their detention.

Prisoner Executed in Kerman Prison for Drug Offenses

On Tuesday, August 13, the execution of a prisoner previously sentenced to death on drug-related charges was carried out in Kerman Prison, according to Haal Vsh.

The prisoner has been identified as “Farajollah Khashi (Jamalzahi), 47 years old, from and residing in Khash, married and father of six children.”

According to a source, Mr. Khashi was arrested in 2022 on drug-related charges in Kerman. He was later sentenced to death. However, while his case was still under review by the Pardon and Clemency Commission of Kerman Province, the execution was carried out.

Khashi had been transferred to solitary confinement on Sunday, August 11, to await his execution. Yesterday, he had his final meeting with his family through a glass partition.

As of the time of this report, the execution has not been officially announced by prison authorities or relevant organizations.

Arsalan Rigi Arrested by Security Forces in Khash

Arsalan Rigi, a resident of Khash in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, was arrested by security forces and taken to an unknown location on June 27, as reported by Haal Vsh.

Rigi, 31 years old, a native and resident of Khash, was arrested on a street in Khash by the Ministry of Intelligence’s forces.

So far, no information has been obtained regarding the reasons for his arrest or his place of detention.

According to data collected by the Department of Statistics and Publication of HRA in 2023, Sistan and Baluchestan Province accounted for 5.63% of reported human rights violations, including instances of arbitrary detentions.

Milad Rigi Arrested by Security Forces in Khash

On March 19, 2024, Milad Rigi Tanha was apprehended by security forces in Khash and subsequently moved to an undisclosed location, as reported by Haal Vsh.

The 20-year-old resident of Khash was allegedly taken into custody by plainclothes officers without the presentation of any arrest warrant. Currently, the grounds for his arrest and the charges levied against him remain undisclosed.

Execution of Two Inmates in Khash and Gonbad-e Kavus

In the past week, the execution of two individuals convicted of murder took place in Khash Prison, located in Sistan and Baluchestan province, and Gonbad-e Kavus Prison in Golestan province.

According to reports from Haal Vsh, Milad Galavi, a 29-year-old native of Zabol, was executed on March 3, 2024, in Khash Prison. Galavi was sentenced to death last year by the Khash Criminal Court for his alleged involvement in the killing of three members of a family.

Similarly, on March 6, Farshad Rakhshani, a 25-year-old father, was executed in Gonbad-e Kavus Prison. Rakhshani had been apprehended two years ago in connection with the death of an individual during a reported altercation.

No official sources or domestic media outlets within the country have provided coverage of these executions at the time of writing. The lack of official information raises concerns about transparency and accountability in the execution process.

In 2023, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered the execution of  746 individuals. Out of these, 6 were carried out in public. Among the executed individuals whose genders were identified, 597 were male and 20 were female. Additionally, 2 juvenile offenders, defined as individuals under the age of 18 at the time of their alleged crimes, were also executed. Five Individuals Arrested in Zahedan and Khash

Security forces arrested Hamid Basham Narooie, Abdolsalam Shohlibor, Esmail Kharkoohi, Behnam Nowruzi and Behnam Safarzaie in Zahedan and Khash and took them to undisclosed locations.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, on February 14 and 15, five individuals were arrested by security forces in Zahedan and Khash, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

Of these individuals, Shohlibor was released a few hours after his arrest.

The reason for these arrests and their whereabouts are still unknown.
