Amnesty International: An Iranian man has been sentenced to death for “insulting the Prophet of Islam”. Soheil Arabi has now had his sentence upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court. He was sentenced for posts deemed offensive to the Prophet he had made on Facebook.
Photogrpaher Soheil Arabi, 30, was sentenced to death on 30 August 2014 for “insulting the Prophet of Islam” (Sabbo al-Nabbi) by a five-judge panel of Branch 76 of the Criminal Court of Tehran: three of the judges ruled in favour of the death penalty. The charge stems from postings Soheil Arabi made on eight Facebook accounts, which the authorities said belong to Soheil Arabi. The Supreme Court upheld the sentence on 24 November. In a separate case stemming from the same Facebook posts, Soheil Arabi was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for “spreading propaganda against the system” and “insulting the leader”, by a Tehran Revolutionary Court on 4 September. HRANA news agency – More than 240 civil activists issued a statement, protesting against the acid attacks and the new religious legislation “promotion of virtue”. These activists emphasized that acid attacks and the new legislations are clear indications of increasing level of violation of women rights in Iran.
According to HRANA report and quoted by Radio Farda, this statement has been signed by a number of activists including Shirin Ebadi, Mahnaz Parakand, Kazem Alamdari, Hassan Yousefi Eshkavari, Asiya Amini, Parastoo Forouhar, Fariba Davoodi Mohajer, Mehri Jafari, Parvin Ardalan and Kouhyar Goodarzi. These activists expressed serious concerns over recent acid attacks in Iran as well as the new religious legislation approved by the Iranian parliament (i.e. promotion of virtue) and suggested that these are coordinated attempts to normalize the violence against women in Iran. Amnesty International – Former prisoner of conscience Arash Sadeghi has been held in Tehran’s Evin Prison since 6 September. He is believed to be in solitary confinement without access to a lawyer and he has yet to be charged. He may be at risk of torture or other ill-treatment.
Arash Sadeghi, a former student activist at Allameh Tabataba’i University, was arrested on 6 September at his workplace in Tehran by men in civilian clothing believed to belong to the Revolutionary Guards. The men took him to his house, searched his possessions and seized items including his laptop, notebooks and some CDs. He has since been held in solitary confinement in Section 2A of Tehran’s Evin Prison, without access to a lawyer. He has only been allowed to make brief phone calls to his father. Amnesty International understands that Arash Sadeghi has not been charged and the authorities have refused to tell his family about his situation or why he was arrested. HRANA News Agency – One hundred teachers and more than 150 trade union and civil rights activists signed a petition about the living conditions of teachers in Iran.

While welcoming the start of new school season, the ongoing problems observed in different areas of the ministry of education don’t picture a prosperous year for teachers and students. Aside from structural and organizational problems observed after the revolution, the eight years of mismanagement during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has created enormous number of problems for the ministry of education. Over the last year, the government of new president, Hasan Rouhani, not only has not resolved these problems but also added a few more problems to the existing public education, teachers, students and families problems. Amnesty International – Human rights activist Saeed Shirzad has been detained in Tehran’s Evin Prison for four months, without access to his lawyer. He has been accused of having contact with political prisoners’ families and cooperating with the office of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran. He is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for his peaceful human rights activism.
Saeed Shirzad, a 27-year-old human rights activist and an active member of the Society for Defending Street and Working Children, has been detained since 2 June 2014. He spent over two months in solitary confinement in Section 209 of Tehran’s Evin Prison, without access to his family and lawyer and under pressure to make a video-taped “confession”, before he was transferred to Section 8, where people jailed for non-political crimes are held. Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran in a statement announced the impending execution of a Concise Prisoner “Mohsen Amir Aslani Zanjani”. He has been sentenced to death on the charges of “heresy in Islam, insulting the Prophet Jonah and committing unlawful act”. Press Release: Human Rights Activists in Iran says “Soheil Arabi, an Iranian citizen accused of insulting the Prophet, has been sentenced to death. The association described the verdict as unjust and called for the immediate repeal of the verdict.
One of the three attorneys of Mr. Arabi discussed this issue with the Human Rights Activists Association in Iran and reported that Tehran’s Penal Court (Branch #76) attended by five judges on August 8th of 2014. After considering Mr. Arabi’s case, 3 judges voted in favor and 2 voted against the conviction under Article 262 of the Penal Code.
