Two Prisoners Executed in Tabriz Prison

HRANA News Agency – On April 23, 2025, two prisoners previously sentenced to death on separate drug-related charges were executed in Tabriz Prison.

Iran Human Rights have identified them as Mehran Zolfi, 27, from Tabriz, and Asghar Nouri-Nia, 35, from Jolfa.

According to the report, Zolfi had been detained for four years and Nouri-Nia for five years, both on drug-related charges. They were ultimately sentenced to death in separate cases by the Revolutionary Court.

As of the time of this report, the executions have not been officially announced by prison authorities or relevant institutions.

In 2024, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran documented 812 cases related to the right to life, including the sentencing of 214 individuals to death and the execution of 930 individuals. Among these, 4 executions were carried out in public. Of those executed, 818 were male, 26 were female, and 5 were juvenile offenders—individuals under 18 years old at the time of their alleged crimes.

HRANA News Agency –On March 29, the death sentences of two prisoners previously convicted on charges related to drug offenses and murder were carried out in Tabriz Prison.

Iran Human Rights has confirmed the identity of one of the executed individuals as Morteza Saadatpour Zeini, a 32-year-old resident of Tabriz. He had been arrested three years ago on drug-related charges and was later sentenced to death.

HRANA has also identified the second prisoner as Mohsen Hedayat, who had been detained on murder charges and subsequently sentenced to death by the judiciary.

At the time of this report’s publication, prison authorities and relevant institutions have not officially announced the executions.

In 2024, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran documented 812 cases related to the right to life, including the sentencing of 214 individuals to death and the execution of 930 individuals. Among these, 4 executions were carried out in public. HRANA News Agency – In recent days, the death sentences of four prisoners previously convicted on drug-related and murder charges were carried out in Ardabil and Tabriz prisons.

According to HRANA, quoting Iran Human Rights, four prisoners were executed in Tabriz and Ardabil prisons.

The identities of these prisoners have been reported as:

. Ali Vatan-Khah, 27, from Parsabad
. Hassan Fathi, 36, from Hashtroud
. Ramin Alaei, 33, from Tabriz
. Mohammad Iraqi, 26, from Tabriz

At dawn on Saturday, March 1, the death sentences of Hassan Fathi and Ramin Alaei, who had been arrested and convicted on drug-related charges about three years ago, were carried out in Tabriz Prison. On the same day, Mohammad Iraqi, who had been arrested four years ago on murder charges and later sentenced to death, was also executed in this prison.

Regarding Ali Vatan-Khah, he was arrested about three years ago on murder charges and later sentenced to death by the judiciary. His execution was carried out at dawn on Thursday, February 27, in Ardabil Prison. He had a final visit with his family one day before the execution.

As of the time of this report, prison and judicial authorities have not officially announced these executions.

HRANA News Agency – At dawn on Sunday, February 9, two prisoners who had been sentenced to death on charges of “rape” in a joint case were executed in Tabriz Prison.

According to HRANA, quoting Iran Human Rights, the executions took place without the prisoners having a final visit with their families. The executed individuals have been identified as 33-year-old Shahram Manafzadeh and 29-year-old Farhad Abdoli.

These two prisoners had previously been sentenced to death by the judiciary in a shared case on charges of “rape.”

As of the time of this report, prison and judicial authorities have not publicly announced these executions.

Update on Student Ehsan Faridi’s Status in Tabriz Prison

Ehsan Faridi, a student at Tabriz Technical and Vocational College, remains in limbo in Tabriz Prison nearly six months after his arrest.

A source close to his family confirmed to HRANA: “Mr. Faridi has been held in limbo for about six months in Tabriz Prison. On Wednesday, December 11, his second court session was held at the Revolutionary Court of Tabriz via video conference, during which he defended himself against the charges.”

The first court session for Mr. Faridi was held on August 3, also via video conference. Additionally, in September, a separate hearing for another part of his case was held at the Tabriz Criminal Court Branch 2.

Ehsan Faridi was arrested on June 18, 2024, after reporting to the Tabriz Prosecutor’s Office and was transferred to Tabriz Prison.

Faridi, a 21-year-old engineering student specializing in manufacturing and production, had previously been arrested on March 8, transferred to Tabriz Prison, and later released on bail after ten days.

Two Prisoners Executed in Tabriz Prison

On Sunday, November 10, two prisoners, a man and a woman, were executed in Tabriz Prison. They had previously been sentenced to death in separate cases on charges related to drug offenses.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists in Iran, the identities of the executed prisoners have been confirmed as “Kazem Babayi, 45, and Mahrokh Khani, 34.”

HRANA’s investigation reveals that Ms. Khani was arrested five years ago, and Mr. Babayi three years ago, in separate cases involving drug-related charges. Both were subsequently sentenced to death by judicial authorities.

As of the time of this report, prison officials and relevant authorities have not publicly announced the executions.

According to latest HRANA’s annual report over between October 10, 2023, and October 8, 2024, at least 811 individuals were executed by hanging in Iran, rising to 23.06% compared to the same period last year. Of these executions, four were carried out in public. Many of the defendants were denied a fair trial.

On September 15, 2024, two prisoners convicted of murder in separate cases were executed in Tabriz Prison, according to the Iran Human Rights Organization.

The executed individuals were identified as Arastoo Safarghomi, 35, and Rasoul Pourmajed, around 45.

According to a source familiar with the cases, Rasoul Pourmajed was arrested at his coffee shop and later sentenced to death for murder. Arastoo Safarghomi had been in detention for over two and a half years, also convicted of murder in a separate case, and received the death penalty.

As of the time of this report, prison and judicial authorities have not officially confirmed the executions.

According to the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran, in 2023, at least 767 citizens, including 21 women and 2 juvenile offenders, were executed. Of these, the executions of 7 individuals were carried out in public. Additionally, during this period, 172 others were sentenced to death, with 5 of them sentenced to public execution. It is worth noting that during the same period, the initial death sentences of 49 other individuals were also upheld by the Supreme Court.

A Report on the Latest Status of Student Ehsan Faridi in Tabriz Prison

Ehsan Faridi, a student at Tabriz Technical College, remains in an uncertain situation in Tabriz Prison more than seventy days after his arrest. A court session addressing part of his case was held today, Wednesday, in the Criminal Court Two of Tabriz.

A source close to Faridi’s family confirmed to HRANA, saying:, “on Wednesday, August 28, a court session for another part of Mr. Faridi’s case was held in the Criminal Court Two of Tabriz. Additionally, a court session for another part of his case was held on August 3rd in the Tabriz Revolutionary Court via video conference. Faridi has been held in an uncertain state in Tabriz Prison for 72 days, and so far, temporary release on bail has not been granted.”

This citizen was arrested on June 18th after appearing at the Tabriz Prosecutor’s Office and was transferred to the city’s prison.

At the time of this report, the charges against Mr. Faridi have not been disclosed.

Faridi, 21, a student in Manufacturing Engineering, was previously arrested on March 8th and transferred to Tabriz Prison. He was eventually released on bail after ten days.

Four Prisoners Executed in Tabriz Prison

On Monday, August 26th, four prisoners, including two Afghan nationals and one Iraqi national, were executed in Tabriz Prison. They had previously been sentenced to death on charges related to drug offenses and murder.

According to Iran Human Rights Organization, the identities of these prisoners are Shapour Hosseini, a resident of Tabriz; Mohibullah (last name unknown), 32 years old, Afghan national; Moshref (last name unknown), 27 years old, Afghan national; and Erfan Abdulazizi, a resident of Kirkuk, Iraq.

A reliable source stated: “Shapour Hosseini was arrested two years ago on drug trafficking charges and sentenced to death. Mohibullah and Moshref were also arrested two years ago in a joint case for armed drug trafficking and sentenced to death. Additionally, Erfan Abdulazizi was arrested three years ago for the premeditated murder of a cement factory guard and was sentenced to death.”

As of the time of this report, the executions have not been officially announced by prison officials or relevant authorities.

On Thursday, August 22, 2024, the execution of a prisoner previously sentenced to death on drug-related charges was carried out in Tabriz Prison, as reported by Kurdpa.

The identity of the prisoner has been reported as Khaled Jahangiri, a resident of the village of “Balu” in the Urmia region, and a father of three children.

According to this report, Mr. Jahangiri was arrested about five years ago on drug-related charges and was sentenced to death by the judicial authorities.

As of the time of this report, the execution has not been officially announced by prison officials or relevant authorities.
