Saeed and Ali Shirzad Arrested

In the new wave of mass arrests following the outbreak of nationwide protest, on Sunday, October 2, 2022, security forces arrested former political prisoner Saeed Shirzad and his brother Ali at their house in Tehran.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on October 2, 2022, former political prisoner Saeed Shirzad and his brother Ali were arrested by security forces.

The reasons for these arrests, charges and their whereabouts are unknown so far.

It is estimated that thousands have been arrested since the outbreak of the Mahsa Amini protests.

 

 

 

Nationwide Protests in Iran on Day Seventeen

On October 4, 2022, the nationwide protests after the death of Mahsa Amini continued in several universities across Iran. On at least 26 universities campus, the students held protests. The students chanted slogans such as “Woman, Life, Freedom,” “Jailed students should be freed,” “We will fight, We will take Iran back,” and “Death to the dictator.” They also chanted slogans against the Supreme Leader, Khamenei.

The global backlash against Mahsa Amini’s death and support for the Iranian protests continued, while the hashtag Mahsa Amini (مهسا_امینی#) was used over 210 million times on Twitter.

Once again, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) broadcasted several coerced confessions from several individuals arrested during the protests.

According to IRGC-affiliated Fars News, during the seventeen days of protests, 15 police vehicles, 70 buses, 85 Ambulances and 30 fire trucks have been damaged.

Yesterday, HRANA identified 32 arrests. HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, is still working on fact-checking and reviewing the obtained reports independently.

Since September 20, Iran’s regime has restricted Iranians’ access to the global Internet just as they did during the protests in November 2019. Most parts of the country, especially Kurdistan, faced internet and mobile phone disruptions and outages.

According to Internet Outage Detection & Analysis (IODA), yesterday, the Irancell internet network users faced a total outage after 10:25 am.

Access to online platforms such as Instagram, Whatsapp, app store, Google play, Starlink, LinkedIn and Discord have also been restricted.

Nationwide Protests in Iran Continue on Day Sixteen

On October 1, 2022, despite the heavy presence of riot police and plainclothes security agents, Iranian people held demonstrations in many cities including Mashhad, Rasht, Dehgolan, Isfahan, Shiraz, Tehran, Shahrekord, Shahin Shahr, Arak, Bukan, Babol, Karaj. Moreover, on at least 27 universities campus, the students held protests. These protests continued in Tehran, Isfahan, Bushehr and at least 25 universities on the following day, October 2.

The map below shows the geographical distribution of protests across Iran during the last 48 hours.

In most cases, peaceful student protests turned violent by the police as dozens of students were arrested by the security forces. On the University of Isfahan campus, the security agents or the police fired tear gas at the crowd of protesting students.

Last night, the police and security forces surrounded the Sharif University of Technology, chasing and arresting violently the students who left the campus. The police fired tear gas and pellet guns, leading to several students’ injuries. 

According to Iran’s Student Union, several protesting students were trapped in a university building by university security agents and then arrested by the police.

The students chanted slogans such as “Death to the dictator”, “don’t call it protests, it is now a revolution”, and “jailed students should be freed.” They also chanted slogans against the Supreme Leader, Khamenei.

On October 2, in Isfahan and Piranshahr, traders and shopkeepers joined the general strike and closed their shops.

Meanwhile, in recent days, the record-breaking hashtag Mahsa Amini (مهسا_امینی#) reached over 200 million times on Twitter.

Like the previous days, most parts of the country, especially Kurdistan, faced internet and mobile phone disruptions and outages.

Last Friday, September 30, in Zahedan, in Sistan and Baluchistan province, the security forces opened fire at the crowd of protestors coming from the Friday prayer. According to Iranian Sunni cleric Molavi Abdul Hamid, at least 40 people were killed in this incident.

The number of people arrested is increasing day on day. HRANA identified 31 arrests alone for yesterday.

Kurdistan police chief claimed that more than 150 people arrested during the “unrest” have been released.

It is estimated that 30 to 40 students at the Sharif University of Technology were arrested.

Anti-riot police and security forces use live ammunition against the protestors. HRANA has identified 150 death tolls, of which some have been verified by HRANA after fact-checking.

Three Individuals Arrested in Abhar

During the arrests in recent days related to the protests in Iran, security forces arrested three residents of Abhar, Saeedeh Moradi, Ali Maghsoudi and Alireza Razavi and took them to Zanjan Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on September 29, 2022, Saeedeh Moradi, Ali Maghsoudi and Alireza Razavi were arrested in Abhar, Zanjan Province.

Iranian Soccer Player Hossein Mahini Arrested

On September 29, 2022,  instigating unrest, Iranian soccer player Hossein Mahini was arrested as most celebrities who have supported the recent protests in Iran.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, On September 29, 2022, Hossein Mahini, Iranian athlete and former player of Iran’s national soccer team was arrested.

Mahini had expressed support for Iran’s protests on social media.

Woman Arrested for Cutting her Hair in Protest 

On September 29, a young woman who cut her hair in protest against the compulsory hejab in Yasuj was attacked and arrested by the security forces.

An informed source told HRANA that the woman had cut her hair, as it is done these days, in protest against compulsory hejab in public. Then, the agents shot at her direction, arrested her, and took her to an unidentified location.

HRANA is working on identifying the woman and obtaining information about her whereabouts.

Since the start of the nationwide protests in Iran, many have cut their hair or burnt their headscarves in protest against the government’s actions.

Songwriter Mona Borzooi Arrested

On September 28, 2022, security forces arrested poet and songwriter Mona Borzooi.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on September 28, 2022, Mona Borzooi was arrested. This was due to the latest poem she wrote in support of Mahsa Amini and the Iranian protests.

Borzooi’s career, as a songwriter, kicked off in 2003 with the lyric “My Tear”. She has written plenty of lyrics for famous Iranian popular singers.

Journalist Elaheh Mohammadi Arrested

On September 29, 2022, security forces arrested Elaheh Mohammadi, a reporter for the daily newspaper Hammihan.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on September 29, 2022, following the arrests of journalists, newspaper reporter Elaheh Mohammadi was also arrested.

Mohammadi’s lawyer, Mohammad Ali Kamfiroozi broke the news on his page on social media, saying that the intelligence agents summoned and arrested her while she was on the way to the Ministry of Intelligence office. As a reporter, Mohammdi had gone to Saqqez and made a report on Mahsa Amini’s funeral.

Report on Yasin Jamalzadeh’s Murder during Nationwide Protests

On September 21, 2022, Yasin Jamalzadeh was shot dead by the military during the protests in Rezvanshahr which was held after the death of Mahsa Amini. HRANA has obtained more details about this case.

Yasin Jamalzadeh, age 28, was a father of twin girls and a resident of Masal County, Gilan Province. He was shot in the chest and died on the spot.

An informed source told HRANA that Yasin Jamalzadeh’s family has been under pressure from the government to not speak about him with the media.

Thousands Arrested in Iran  While Nationwide Protests Continue for the Eleventh Day

On September 27, 2022, nationwide protests following Mahsa Amini’s death continued in several cities including Sanandaj, Tehran, Kermanshah, and Chabahar. Protestors chanted slogans such as “Woman, Life, Freedom”, and “Death to the Dictator.”

For the second consecutive day, the students of the College of Dentistry at the University of Tabriz went on strike and gathered on campus to protest the students’.

The global backlash against Mahsa Amini’s death and support for the Iranian protests is growing, while the hashtag Mahsa Amini (مهسا_امینی#) was used over 100 million times on Twitter.

It is estimated that thousands have been arrested. Although the exact numbers are still unknown, HRANA has identified 144 individuals so far.

An informed source told HRANA that several protestors in Tehran are kept in Ward 209 of Evin Prison. Some of the women were transferred to Qarchak Prison in Varamin city and some men to Great Tehran Penitentiary.

According to Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 20 journalists have also been arrested since the beginning of the protests.

At least 450 individuals have been arrested in Sari, 180 in Gonbad-e Kavus, 155 in Semnan Province, and 180 in Ilam Province. HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, is still working on fact-checking and reviewing these reports independently.

Anti-riot police and security forces have fired directly at the crowd of protestors, according to eyewitnesses.

HRANA has obtained the identity of 54 individuals killed during the protests, of which several have been verified.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) has reported 41 deaths and Iran Human Rights Organization has reported 76 so far.

Large-scale internet and mobile phone disruptions and outages have been reported and platforms such as Whatsapp and Instagram are restricted.
