Four Citizens Sentenced to Imprisonment and Flogging for Opposing Compulsory Hijab

Maryam Bani-Razi Motlagh, Abdolbagher Amani, Reza Rashidi, and Mohammad-Reza Rostami have been sentenced to over 17 months in prison and 148 lashes combined, along with additional punishment, by the Criminal Court of Qom.

Amani, Rashidi and Rostami each received 91 days and were prohibited from taking a public service profession for two years. This punishment is for hindering religious vigilantes from carrying out their religious duty of “enjoining good and forbidding wrong,” which includes enforcing compulsory hijab.
As HRANA earlier reported, Bani-Razi was sentenced to over eight months, 148 lashes and additional punishments for not complying with the compulsory Hijab.
The four individuals were reportedly arrested during the 2022 nationwide protests and were later released on bond.

The Tehran Revolutionary Court has sentenced Arsam Mahmoudi, a Tabriz resident, to six years in prison. He was arrested in Tehran amid the 2022 nationwide protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Arsam Mahmoudi was sentenced to six years in prison.

Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, gave Mahmoudi five years for “assembly and collusion against national security,” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.” If the verdict is upheld on appeal, the first charge will be enforceable under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code.

Mahmoudi, 31, a civil engineering Master’s graduate, was arrested by security forces in Tehran during the 2022 nationwide protests in Tehran.

Jailed Journalists Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi Indicted on Multiple Charges

The Iranian Judiciary’s spokesperson has announced that detained journalists Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi have been indicted on various charges. Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court will be handling their cases.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the judiciary’s news agency, Mizan, reporters Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi were indicted on “collaboration with an adversary country, assembly and collusion against national security and propaganda against the regime.”

Masoud Setayeshi, the Judiciary’s spokesperson, stated that their indictment was issued on April 17, 2023, and their cases were referred to Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

Hamedi, a reporter for the daily newspaper Shargh, was arrested at her residence in Tehran by security forces on September 22, 2022. She was the first journalist to publish a picture of Mahsa Amini in a coma. In December 2022, she was transferred to Qarchak Prison in Varamin.

Mohammadi, a reporter for the daily newspaper Ham-Mihan, was arrested on September 29, 2022, after traveling to Saqqez and reporting on the funeral of Mahsa Amini.

Journalist Elaheh Mohammadi Still Detained After Six Months

Elaheh Mohammadi, a reporter for the daily newspaper Ham-Mihan, has been in detention for over six months in Qarchak Prison, Varamin, with an unclear status regarding due process.

Mohammadi’s husband, Saeed Para, stated, “Her lawyer does not have access to the legal files… no matter how much we tried, we did not receive any answers from the officials. From the prosecutor’s office to the court, they all breach the procedural law.”

“We met with as many officials as we could and waited for hours and days in front of Evin courthouse and judicial offices, we obtained even an urgent review order, but in the end, it went nowhere. Despite all promises, our request remains unanswered, and we are still at square one,” Parsa added.

On September 29, 2022, security forces arrested Mohammadi following her travel to Saqqez and publishing a report on the funeral of Mahsa Amini.

Ruhollah Heidari Arrested

On April 3, security forces arrested Ruhollah Heidari and took him to an undisclosed location. His brother, Javad Heidari, was killed by regime forces amid the 2022 nationwide protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on April 3, 2023, Ruhollah Heidari was arrested.

His sister, Fatemeh Heidari informed the public, “After the arrest of my three brothers and firing me from my job, today, they arrested my other brother, Ruhollah Heidari, without giving any reason. My family’s inquiries have remained unanswered so far.”
Heidari’s detained location and the allegation against him are also unknown.

On September 22, 2022, his brother, Javad Heidari, age 36, was shot dead at protests in Qazvin.

Iran Protests: Mehdi Dastani Sentenced to Imprisonment and Flogging

The Yazd Criminal Court sentenced teacher Mehdi Dastani, arrested at the 2022 nationwide protests, to one year in prison and 74 lashes, a ban from leaving the country and termination of service as a teacher.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Medi Dastani, a teacher and resident of Yazd, was sentenced to one year in prison and flogging.

Dastani received this verdict for “disturbing public order by creating traffic on the street and accompanying troublemakers.” This verdict was upheld on appeal.

An informed source told HRANA, “last March, Dastani was summoned to endure flogging and start serving his sentence.”

“He was acquitted from other charges due to the lack of evidence,” the source added.

On September 28, 2022, Dastani was arrested at nationwide protests by security forces in Yazd and released after three days on 700-million-toman bail.

Security forces arrested an individual in Kermanshah for “association with anti-regime satellite television channels and leading the protests.”

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Fars News Agency, an individual was arrested by IRGC forces in Kermanshah.

This report claims that this individual “met anti-regime groups in Kurdish regions of Iran one month before the beginning of [nationwide] protests. He also sent pictures of protests and strikes to anti-regime satellite television channels.”

He was also accused of leading the protests. This report did not disclose his identity and his detained location.

The Revolutionary Court sentenced Behrooz Izadi Rad, arrested amid nationwide protests, to four years and one month in prison. After pleading no contest, his sentence was reduced to two years and ten months.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Behrooz Izadi Rad was sentenced to imprisonment.

According to this verdict issued by the Revolutionary Court of Aliabad-e Katul, Golestan Province, Izadi Rad received four years and one month. Since he pleaded no contest, his sentence was reduced to nine months for “propaganda against the regime” and 25 months for “inciting people to unrest,” in total, two years and ten months, detention period included.

On December 19, 2022, Izadi Rad was summoned to the court to defend himself against the accusations.

In September 2022, security forces arrested Izadi Rad in Golestan Prison and, after a while, jailed him in Amirabad Prison in Gorgan.

Mohammad Havashemzadeh, arrested during nationwide protests, is still in prolonged detention for over four months in Great Tehran Penitentiary.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Mohammad Havashemzadeh is still detained for over four months, awaiting further legal proceedings.

An informed source told HRANA, “Havashemzadeh was held about 20 days of this detention in solitary confinement. He has been charged with a crime against national security for participating in protests. After 142 days, he is still jailed in uncertainty in Great Tehran Penitentiary.”

The Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentenced Amir Sheibani Zaveh, arrested during nationwide protests, to eight years and six months imprisonment.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, protestor Amir Sheibani Zaveh was sentenced to imprisonment.

Sheibani received four years and six months for “assembly and collusion against the regime,” three years for “membership in anti-regime groups,” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.”

If the verdict is upheld on appeal, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, four years and six months for the first count will be enforceable.

According to Sheibani, “publishing the calls for protests, the pictures of Mahsa Amini and Nika Shakarmi’s burial place on social media, and attending one of the killed protestors’ funeral in Mashhad” was presented in the court as pieces of evidence for the charges.

Since the beginning of nationwide protests, about 19570 people, including journalists, artists, lawyers, teachers, students and civil rights activists, have been arrested. So far, over protests, about 737 people have been sentenced to a total of about 12330 months imprisonment.
