Two Prisoners Executed in Yasuj Prison on Drug-Related Charges

HRANA News Agency – On Monday, April 21, the death sentences of two prisoners previously convicted on drug-related charges were carried out in Yasuj Prison.

HRANA has identified the hanged individuals as Mohammad Ahmadzadeh and Behnam (last name unknown).

According to information received by HRANA, both individuals had been arrested on drug-related charges and were later sentenced to death by judicial authorities.

As of the time of this report’s publication, the executions have not been officially announced by prison officials or relevant authorities.

According to data compiled by HRANA, 52.69% of all executions in Iran in 2024 were related to drug-related charges. Notably, only 6% of the executions were officially announced, highlighting a significant lack of transparency. HRANA News Agency – At dawn on Thursday, January 30, a prisoner who had been sentenced to death on murder charges was executed in Yasuj Prison.

HRANA has identified the executed prisoner as Mohammad Zaboli. Based on information obtained by HRANA, Mr. Zaboli was arrested in 2019 on murder charges and later sentenced to death by a criminal court.

As of the time of this report, prison authorities and relevant institutions have not officially announced his execution.

In 2024, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran documented 812 cases related to the right to life, including the sentencing of 214 individuals to death and the execution of 930 individuals. Among these, 4 executions were carried out in public. Of those executed, 818 were male, 26 were female, and 5 were juvenile offenders—individuals under 18 years old at the time of their alleged crimes.

At Least 15 Prisoners Executed in Iran on New Year’s Day

On the first day of the new year, at least 15 prisoners were executed in various prisons across Iran. The executions, carried out in Malayer, Bandar Abbas, Yasuj, and Ghezel Hesar (Karaj) prisons, involved individuals convicted of drug-related charges and murder.

Details of the Executions

  • Malayer Prison:
    Mohammad Shafi Mousavi, convicted of murder, was hanged at dawn.
  • Bandar Abbas Prison:
    Three prisoners were executed. One was identified as Hedayat Ghasemi from Rudan, convicted on drug-related charges. The other two, Afghan nationals, remain unidentified.
  • Yasuj Prison:
    Pezhman Masoudi Koushk, around 25 years old, was executed at dawn. He had been convicted of murder.
  • Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj:
    Ten prisoners were executed. Two of them, including Mohammad Hossein Mohammadi-Far and an Afghan national named Pasha, were convicted on drug-related charges.

    Eight others had been convicted of murder. Details of three cases, reported by Rokna, are as follows:

    • Arshia, born in the 2000s, killed his stepfather with a handgun during an argument in December 2022.
    • Amir, an Afghan national, was arrested in July 2022 for killing a man during a fight and was sentenced to death.
    • Another prisoner, who killed his brother-in-law in October 2022 over an inheritance dispute, was among those executed.

The executions come amid growing concerns about the rising number of death sentences in Iran.

Today, January 1, 2025, the death sentence of a prisoner previously convicted of murder was carried out in Yasuj Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, the hanged individual has been identified as Pezhman Masoudi Koushk, approximately 25 years old.
 

As of the time of this report, prison authorities and related institutions have not officially announced the execution.

At dawn yesterday, December 3, a prisoner previously sentenced to death on charges of murder was executed in Yasuj Prison.

The identity of the prisoner has been confirmed by HRANA as Sadegh Asadi, approximately 40 years old and a resident of Gachsaran.

Based on HRANA’s information, the prisoner was arrested five years ago for the murder of a relative and was sentenced to death by the judiciary.

As of the time of this report, prison authorities and relevant institutions have not publicly announced the execution.

According to latest HRANA’s annual report over between October 10, 2023, and October 8, 2024, at least 811 individuals were executed by hanging in Iran, rising to 23.06% compared to the same period last year. Of these executions, four were carried out in public. Many of the defendants were denied a fair trial.

Political Detainee Farshad Etemadifar Denied Medical Treatment in Sheiban Prison, Ahvaz

Farshad Etemadifar, a political detainee, has been denied specialized medical care and transfer to medical facilities despite suffering from gastrointestinal diseases. He has been held in Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz for over fourteen months without trial.

A source close to Etemadifar’s family confirmed this to HRANA, stating, “Mr. Etemadi Far suffers from gastrointestinal issues, including stomach and intestinal problems, as well as shortness of breath. His family has repeatedly brought his necessary medications to the prison, but the authorities have refused to deliver them. Even when he visited the prison’s infirmary, he was not treated due to the lack of necessary medications and facilities.”

According to information obtained by HRANA, Etemadifar has previously been charged with “membership in opposition groups” and “assembly and collusion against national security.” He has been held in Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz for 446 days without resolution.

Etemadifar, a resident of Pichab village in the Bash Province of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, was arrested along with three other citizens—Saman Hormatnejad, Davood Hormatnejad, and Mahan Sajedi—by Ministry of Intelligence agents on June 16 of last year. After completing the interrogation process, they were transferred to Yasuj Prison from a Ministry of Intelligence detention facility in Yasuj.

In December of 2023, Etemadi Far, along with Saman and Davood Hormatnejad, was transferred to Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz. Mahan Sajedi was transferred to Shiraz Prison.

In August of last year, Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the IRGC, claimed in a report that these citizens were connected to the “Monafeqin network” and intended to carry out “disruptive operations” in the provinces of Khuzestan, Fars, and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad.

In the terminology of the Islamic Republic, the terms “Monafeqin” and “Monafeqin network” refer to the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, an opposition group.

Execution of Maryam Forough-Manesh in Yasuj Prison

On November 1, Maryam Forough-Manesh, an inmate, met her unfortunate end through execution in Yasuj Prison. She had previously been convicted of murder.

As of the time of writing, no official sources or domestic media outlets within the country have provided any reports or coverage on these executions.

According to data compiled by the Center of Statistics of Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA), between October 10, 2022, and October 8, 2023, a total of 659 individuals were executed by hanging in Iran, representing a 24% increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. Couple Executed in Yasuj Central Prison

On Tuesday, November 23, a couple was executed in Yasuj Central Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rokna, the man and woman had previously been sentenced to death after being charged with the murder of two people. HRANA has identified the executed man as Siavash Ardeshiri. The identity of the executed woman is still unknown as of this writing.

Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Yasuj Seyed Ali Malek-Hosseini commented on the verdict.

“On December 18, 2018, a man and his wife are arrested on the charge of murdering two people and subsequently were sentenced to death,” Malek-Hosseini stated. “This verdict was confirmed by the Supreme Court. The convicted man claimed that his motivation for these homicides was to save his marriage relationship.”

The most recent report of the Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) states that between October 8 of 2020 and October 9 of 2021, at least 266 citizens, three of whom were juvenile offenders, were executed and 90 citizens were sentenced to death.

As the report points out, Iran’s judicial authorities do not publicly announce over 82% of executions. These unreported executions are known as “secret executions” by human rights organizations.

 

 

Ali Mardan Boland Gerami Executed in Yasuj Prison after Receiving Sentence Based Solely on “Qassameh”

At dawn on Wednesday, September 8, Ali Mardan Boland Gerami, was executed in Yasuj Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Gerami was sentenced to death for murder based on “Qasameh”, an accepted form of proof of guilt within Iran’s legal system based solely on relatives’ oaths.

Mr. Gerami was sentenced to death for murdering his wife, and, while the court did not find adequate evidence, it made the ruling based on the swearing of the wife’s family.

Iran ranks first in the world in citizen executions per capita, according to international organizations. The Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) reported that between January 1 and December 20 of 2020, at least 236 citizens were executed.

One of these citizens was executed publicly, and two were juvenile offenders. An additional 95 citizens were sentenced to death. According to the same report, more than 72% of executions in Iran are not reported by the government or the judiciary, which human rights organizations call “secret” executions.
