On the morning of July 7, a prisoner who had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges was executed in Qom Prison.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Iran Human Rights (IHR), Feizollah Ahmad Zadeh was married and had a child.  The report quoted an informed source as saying that Ahmad Zadeh was arrested and sentenced to death about four years ago on drug-related charges.

21-year-old Mehdi-J Executed in Mashhad Prison

On Monday, July 5, a prisoner who had previously been sentenced to death for murder was executed in Mashhad Prison. The execution took place after the sentence was upheld by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Khorasan newspaper, the prisoner has been identified as Mehdi-J.

70-Year-Old Man Executed in Mashhad Prison

On June 30, a 70-year-old prisoner who had previously been sentenced to death for the murder of his wife was executed in Mashhad Prison after 9 years.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting the Khorasan newspaper, court judges first sentenced the prisoner to death, and then the defendant appealed the verdict issued by the Third Branch of Criminal Court One.

The case was sent to Branch 37 of the Supreme Court for reconsideration, but the death sentence was upheld by the judges. After the verdict was finalized, the execution was carried out.

On Wednesday, June 30, a prisoner who had previously been sentenced to death on charges of murder was executed in Mashhad Prison.

10 Months After his Execution, Supreme Court Overturns Khedr Ghavidel’s Death Sentence

Nearly 10 months after the execution of Khedr Ghavidel in Urmia Prison, his death sentence has been overturned by the Supreme Court.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Ghavidel was executed in September 2020 while his case was being processed by the Supreme Court.

A source close to the family of the executed prisoner told HRANA: “A few days ago, Ghavidel’s family was invited to the Urmia Prosecutor’s Office, and they were informed about this issue. The prosecutor told Ghavidel’s family that you could file a case and receive the ransom of the executed prisoner.”

In a similar situation, on Saturday, July 3, the death sentences of two prisoners, Nasser Azmoudeh and Shahriyar Amiri, were carried out in Urmia Prison in a situation where their case has not yet been heard by the Supreme Court.

The lack of a fair and transparent trial process in the Iranian judiciary, especially in cases that lead to irreversible sentences such as the death penalty, has long been criticized by human rights organizations.

Azim Karimzai Executed in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad

At dawn on June 25, a prisoner was executed in Vakilabad Prison in the city of Mashhad in Razavi Khorasan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting The Baloch Activists Campaign, Azim Karimzai, son of Mullah Sharif, had been previously sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

Mohammad Taher Soleimani Executed in Mahabad Prison

Yesterday, June 30, Mohammad Taher Soleimani was executed in Mahabad Prison in Kurdistan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, Soleimani had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

Mohammad Taher Soleimani was 65 years old and from Dizaj village in Margavar Rural District of Urmia County in West Azerbaijan Province.

Mr. Soleimani was transferred to solitary confinement on June 29, and his family was summoned to Mahabad Prison for their final visit.

Habib Rezaei Executed on Charge of Murder in Salmas Prison

At dawn on Monday, June 21, Habib Rezaei was executed in Salmas Prison in West Azerbaijan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, Salmas native Habib Rezaei had been previously sentenced to death on a charge of murder under the Qisas (loosely translated as “eye-for-an-eye”) principle of Shariah Law.

The report quotes an informed source as saying, “Three years ago, Mr. Rezaei killed a man in a personal altercation, and then he was sentenced to death by the judiciary”.

Ramin Sa’adat Beiglou Executed in Qazvin Prison

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Iran Human Rights (IHR), On June 20, Ramin Sa’adat Beiglou, a resident of Zanjan who had previously been sentenced to death for murder, was executed in Qazvin Central Prison.

The report quoted an informed source as saying, “Ramin has been in prison since 2017 on charges of murdering a person who owed Ramin 10 million tomans (less than $200).”

According to international organizations, Iran has the highest rate of citizen executions per-capita. Based on HRANA’s Statistics and Publication Center, during a one year period (January 1, 2020, to December 20, 2020), at least 236 citizens were executed from which two were juvenile offenders, and one case was a public execution. An additional 95 citizens were sentenced to death.

25-Year-Old Prisoner Executed in Adelabad Prison After Being Tortured and Forced to Confess

On May 15, 2021, an inmate in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz was executed on a charge of rape. The prisoner’s identity was confirmed by HRANA as 25-year-old Behzad Ad’l.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, Ad’l  was transferred to solitary confinement for execution along with three others sentenced to death on the morning of the 15th.

In June of last year, Ad’l was arrested and sentenced to death and 99 lashes by Branch 1 of the criminal court in Fars Province, presided over by Judge Rajaeinia. The case was appealed and referred to the Supreme Court, and the previous ruling was upheld in less than 18 days.

According to an informed source, the Ad’l’s execution was carried out very hastily, despite at least 2 of his 3 plaintiffs’ agreement on the withdrawal of the sentence.   Start to finish, the  process of issuance, approval, and execution of the sentence took place over the course of less than seven months.

Ad’l did not have a lawyer.  According to the lawsuit in Branch 1 of criminal court in the Fars Province, issued in October 2020, Behzad Ad’l had stated that during interrogation he was tortured and forced to confess to the charges. If he did not cooperate, authorities threatened that his “grandmother (would) be run-over by car.”

At least three other prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement along with Mr. Ad’l for execution. The fate and identities of the other three prisoners are currently unknown.
