Nima Radmanesh and Hossein Esmaeilzadeh Arrested in Tabriz

Yesterday, December 16, Nima Radmanesh and Hossein Esmaeilzadeh, two residents of Tabriz, were arrested by security forces in the city and taken to an undisclosed location.

Based on information received by HRANA, the arrests of Mr. Radmanesh and Mr. Esmaeilzadeh took place separately yesterday at their family homes in Tabriz.

As of the time of this report, no information is available about the reasons for their arrests, their current whereabouts, or the charges against them.

Nima Radmanesh, 21, has a history of prior judicial encounters and arrests.

Journalist Reza Valizadeh Sentenced to Ten Years Imprisonment and Additional Punishments

Reza Valizadeh, a journalist currently detained in Evin Prison, has been sentenced by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 10 years in prison, a two-year ban on leaving the country, and additional penalties.

According to Mohammad Hossein Aghasi, his attorney, the verdict issued by Judge Iman Afshari convicted Mr. Valizadeh of “collaboration with a hostile government (the United States).” Alongside the 10-year prison sentence, he has been banned from leaving the country, residing in Tehran Province or neighboring provinces, and joining any political or social parties or groups for two years as part of his supplementary punishments.

Despite the conclusion of investigations and the issuance of an initial verdict, Mr. Valizadeh remains confined to Evin Prison’s Ward 209, a section controlled by the Ministry of Intelligence, and is denied both transfer to the general ward and visitation with his family.

The trial for Mr. Valizadeh was held on November 20, following his arrest in late September by security forces. He had previously returned to Iran in March after living abroad for several years. Upon arrival, he was interrogated by the IRGC and Ministry of Intelligence and released only after signing a written commitment to cooperate with authorities if summoned.

Months later, he was detained again and transferred to Evin Prison. Voice of America previously reported that he is being held in isolation and remains barred from meeting his family.

Before his emigration, Mr. Valizadeh had been arrested in 2007 and was later released on bail. With probable dual citizenship, he is an experienced journalist, having worked with several media outlets, including Radio France, Voice of America, Radio Farda, and the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

In 2023, the Department of Statistics and Publications of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) documented 2,380 cases in which citizens, including journalists and civil rights activists, faced legal and security consequences for exercising their freedom of expression and thought. These incidents resulted in the arrest of 3,130 individuals.

Reza Khandan Arrested by Security Forces

Reza Khandan, the husband of prominent human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, was arrested by security forces earlier today.

According to HRANA, the news arm of Human Rights Activists in Iran, Mr. Khandan was taken into custody on the morning of Friday, December 13, 2024.

Mehraveh Khandan, his daughter, revealed in a social media post that her father was arrested at their home.

At the time of this report, no details have been provided regarding the charges against him or his current location.

Reza Khandan is married to Nasrin Sotoudeh, a well-known lawyer and human rights activist who has been repeatedly arrested and sentenced for her advocacy work.

Symbolic Concert in Caravanserai Leads to Legal Action Against Parastoo Ahmadi and Crew

On December 11, Parastoo Ahmadi, a female singer, performed a symbolic concert with a group of musicians in an old caravanserai. The concert, held without an audience, was broadcast live on her YouTube channel. The event drew significant attention and praise on social media but also provoked a response from the Judiciary, which announced legal action against Ahmadi and the concert’s production team.

The Judiciary alleged that the performance violated “legal and religious standards” due to the participation of a female singer and cited the absence of proper authorization.

In a statement, the Judiciary Media Center said: “A video titled ‘Symbolic Concert’ was published online, showing a music performance led by a female singer without observing the country’s legal and religious standards. The clip, which lacked official authorization and failed to comply with cultural and legal regulations, has prompted judicial intervention. Legal cases have been filed against the singer and the production team for appropriate action.”

Parastoo Ahmadi, a dissenting singer based in Tehran, is known for her critical and protest-oriented works, including addressing issues such as the suppression of free speech and the killing of demonstrators. She has faced previous legal actions for her activities.

Hazhar Soltani-Azar Sentenced to Six Months in Prison

Hazhar Soltani-Azar, a resident of Bukan, has been sentenced to six months in prison by the Revolutionary Court of this city.

According to HRANA, quoting Kolbar News, the Branch 104 of the Revolutionary Court in Bukan issued the sentence against Soltani-Azar on the charge of “propaganda against the regime.”

Previously, Soltani-Azar was arrested by security forces on October 6, 2023, and released on bail on October 13.

Civil Rights Activist Elham Salehi Sentenced to Prison and Fine

Elham Salehi, a civil activist, has been sentenced to six months in prison and fined 20 million tomans. The prison sentence has been suspended for five years.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists in Iran, Salehi was convicted on charges of “spreading falsehoods,” “disturbing public opinion by insulting the former president,” and “propaganda against the regime.” The court handed down a six-month prison term, which has been suspended for five years, and imposed a fine of 20 million tomans.

The case stems from her reaction to the death of Ebrahim Raisi. Following the crash of a helicopter carrying the then-President, Ebrahim Raisi, which resulted in his death, dozens of individuals faced legal prosecution for their comments on the incident.

Salehi’s legal troubles began when security forces raided her home, conducting a search and confiscating personal belongings, including her mobile phone and handwritten notes.

In October 2023, she was summoned to a prosecutor’s office, where she was formally charged.

Elham Salehi has a history of legal challenges related to her civil activism.

Edris Menbari Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison

Edris Menbari, arrested during the 2022 nationwide protests, has been sentenced to 2 years in prison by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj. One year of his sentence has been suspended for three years.

According to HRANA, citing Kurdpa, the court convicted Menbari on charges of “forming groups with the intent to disrupt national security.” The verdict was issued by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj and communicated to him on December 9, 2023.

In a previous ruling by the same court in October 2023, Menbari was sentenced to 10 years in prison for similar charges. However, the Appeals Court overturned that sentence, and the case was sent back for review.

In another segment of his case, in October 2023, Branch 106 of the Criminal Court of Sanandaj sentenced him to 1 year in prison and 40 lashes.

Menbari, a resident of Sanandaj and a board member of the Nozhin Cultural and Social Association, was originally arrested on December 18, 2022, at his home in Sanandaj during the nationwide protests. He was released on bail in February 2023.

Kamal Jafari Yazdi Arrested by Ministry of Intelligence in Mashhad

Today, December 10, Kamal Jafari Yazdi, a political defendant, was arrested by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence in Mashhad and transferred to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists in Iran, Kamal Jafari Yazdi was detained at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. A source close to his family confirmed the arrest, stating that he was taken from his residence in Mashhad. During the arrest, intelligence agents searched his home and confiscated his mobile phone.

As of this report, the reasons for his arrest and the charges against him remain unknown.

Kamal Jafari Yazdi has a history of prior arrests and judicial confrontations due to his activities.

Heydar Fattahi Sentenced to 37 Months in Prison

Heydar Fattahi, a resident of Marivan, has been sentenced to 37 months in prison by the Revolutionary Court of Marivan.

According to HRANA, citing Kolbar News, the court convicted Fattahi on charges of “collaborating with an anti-regime party.”

Fattahi was arrested on June 8, 2024, by agents of the city’s Ministry of Intelligence at his home and was subsequently transferred to the agency’s detention facility in Marivan. He was released after four months on bail of 800 million tomans.

Appeals Court Upholds One-Year Prison Sentence for Attorney Mehdi Karimi Farsi

The one-year prison sentence for Seyed Mehdi Karimi Farsi, a senior attorney and member of the Central Bar Association, has been upheld by Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals. This decision confirms the initial ruling by the lower court.

According to the ruling, issued by Branch 36 and delivered to Mr. Karimi Farsi’s defense attorney on November 24, 2024, he was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime.”

Previously, on October 12, 2024, Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Seyed Ali Mazlum, had issued the same sentence against Mr. Karimi Farsi.

A court hearing regarding these charges, involving Mr. Karimi Farsi and two other attorneys, was held earlier on February 5, 2024, in the same branch of the Revolutionary Court.

In August 2023, Karimi Farsi drew widespread attention among Iranian attorneys by staging a protest walk across Tehran to defend the independence of the Bar Association. This symbolic act resonated deeply within the legal community and highlighted ongoing concerns over the pressures faced by Iranian lawyers.
