Within Two Days, Six Citizens Arrested in Piranshahr

HRANA News Agency – On Sunday and Monday, January 19 and 20, 2025, at least six individuals were arrested by security forces in Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan province.

According to HRANA, quoting Kurdpa, on Sunday, security forces arrested a citizen in Piranshahr identified as Hiwa Shojaei, a 34-year-old resident of the city. The arrest reportedly occurred at his workplace without a judicial warrant.

Additionally, on Monday, January 20, 2025, security forces detained five more individuals in Piranshahr: Mohammad Sohrabi, Fardin Mahmoudi, Morad Ostavar, Nemat Ahmadnejad, and Anvar Ebrahimi.

Among the detainees, Sohrabi, who was previously arrested during the nationwide protests of 2022, has a history of legal confrontations and convictions due to his activism.

As of the time of this report, there is no information about the reasons for the arrests, the detainees’ whereabouts, or the charges against these six citizens.

Ayoub Damavandi Sentenced to Over 5 Years in Prison

Ayoub Damavandi, a resident of Piranshahr County, has been sentenced to five years and 15 days in prison by the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad, according to Kurdpa.

The report states that Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad, presided over by Judge Doosti, recently sentenced Mr. Damavandi to five years and 15 days in prison on charges of espionage.

Mr. Damavandi was arrested at his home in Piranshahr on August 1, 2023, by security forces without a judicial warrant and transferred to one of the IRGC Intelligence detention facilities in Urmia.

Ayoub Damavandi, a resident of a village in Piranshahr County, was eventually transferred to Naghadeh Prison one month later after the completion of interrogation procedures.

Prisoner Executed in Naqadeh Prison for Drug Offenses

Today, October 31, the death sentence of a prisoner previously convicted on drug-related charges was carried out in Naqadeh Prison.

HRANA has identified the prisoner as Vahid Binami, a 40-year-old resident of Piranshahr. He was previously arrested on drug-related charges and subsequently sentenced to death by the judiciary.

As of this report, prison officials and responsible authorities have not yet publicly announced the execution of this prisoner.

Vahid Abubakri Arrested by Security Forces in Piranshahr

On September 5, security forces arrested Vahid Abubakri in Piranshahr and transferred him to an undisclosed location, according to Kurdpa.

His identity has been reported as Vahid Abubakri, 27 years old, and a resident of Kondareh village, Piranshahr. The report states that the arrest took place on Thursday, September 5, 2024, by security forces.

As of the time of this report, no information is available regarding the reasons for his arrest, his place of detention, or the charges against Mr. Abubakri.

Sa’doun Sharifi Arrested by Security Forces in Piranshahr

On Wednesday, September 4, Sa’doun Sharifi, a resident of Piranshahr, was arrested by security forces and transferred to one of the security detention centers in Urmia, according to Kurdpa.

His identity has been reported as Sa’doun Sharifi, from Gardaseh village, a suburb of Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan province.

The report states that on the evening of Wednesday, security forces arrested this citizen without presenting a judicial warrant and transferred him to a security detention center in Urmia. Additionally, Mr. Sharifi’s mobile phone was confiscated by the agents.

Two Individuals Detained by Security Forces in Piranshahr

On May 6, 2024, security forces apprehended Somayeh Ghaderi and Hossein Bayazidi in Piranshahr, West Azerbaijan province, and transported them to an undisclosed location, according to Kurdpa.

Somayeh Ghaderi’s brother, Mohsen Ghaderi, is presently incarcerated in Naqadeh Prison on political charges. The individuals were reportedly taken from their residences without the presentation of any arrest warrant. As of now, the motive for their detention, their current whereabouts, and the specifics of the allegations against them remain unknown.

Soran Mahmoudi Sentenced to Three Years for Political Charges

The Revolutionary Court of Mahabad has sentenced Soran Mahmoudi, a resident of Piranshahr, to three years in prison on political charges, according to a report by Kurdpa.

Judge Doosti, who presided over the case, sentenced Mahmoudi to three years for “membership in a group aiming to undermine national security.” Mahmoudi was initially arrested by security forces in September 2023 and was released on bail in November while awaiting legal proceedings.

Hossein Burakah Sentenced to Prison and Exile on Political Charges

Hossein Burakah has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison by the Revolutionary Court of Mahabad, according to a report by Kurdpa. In addition, he received a one-year exile to Urmia.

Burakah was convicted of alleged membership in anti-regime groups.

He was arrested on October 23, 2023, after appearing at the courthouse in Piranshahr, and was transferred to Naqadeh Prison. Two days later, he was moved to the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility in Urmia and then returned to Naqadeh Prison. Burakah had previously been detained by security forces in early October of the previous year.

Four Sunni Clerics Sentenced to a Combined 11 Years in Prison

According to Kurdpa, the Special Clerical Court in Urmia has handed down prison sentences totaling 11 years to Sunni clerics Younes Nokhah, Seyed Soleiman Ahmadi, Sharif Mahmoud-Pour, and Seyed Jamaleddin Vazhi.

Under this ruling, Nokhah received three years, Ahmadi four years, Mahmoud-Pour two years, and Vazhi two years. The charges levied against them include “acting against national security” and “disturbing public opinion.”

On January 23, 2023, Vazhi and Mahmoud-Pour were arrested by security forces in Piranshahr, and subsequently released on bail after a period of detention. The following day, Nokhah and Ahmadi were apprehended on the Piranshahr to Passveh road without a visible arrest warrant. They were then transferred from the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility in Urmia to Urmia Prison. Nokhah, who spent 23 days in detention, faced denial of legal representation and family visits during this period.

Additionally, Nokhah has received a separate sentence of defrocking and 58 months and 15 days from the Special Clerical Court of Tabriz.

Sadegh Mahmood-Nejad Sentenced to Five Years and Six Months in Prison

Sadegh Mahmood-Nejad, a resident of Piranshahr, has been handed a five-year-and-six-month prison sentence by the Mahabad Revolutionary Court, according to a report by Kurdpa.

Mahmood-Nejad was found guilty of “membership in an anti-regime political party and spreading propaganda against the regime.”

In another part of his legal case, the Criminal Court of Piranshahr has sentenced Mahmood-Nejad to pay a fine substituting a three-month prison term and 30 lashes.

The incident unfolded on July 3, 2023, when security forces arrested Mahmood-Nejad at his residence, subsequently detaining him in Naqadeh Prison. Following 12 days of incarceration, he was released on bail.
