HRANA – Today, October 28, the death sentence of a prisoner previously convicted on drug-related charges was carried out in Gorgan Prison.
HRANA has identified the prisoner, who was hanged at dawn on Tuesday, October 28, as Saeed Hadadian. Based on information received by HRANA, Mr. Hadadian had earlier been arrested on drug-related charges and later sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court.
At the time of this report, the execution has not been announced by prison authorities or other official bodies.
According to HRANA’s report, in 2024, over 52 percent of executed prisoners had been convicted on drug-related charges. Over the past ten years, individuals convicted of drug trafficking have accounted for 40 percent of all executions. Unfortunately, HRANA’s statistics show no progress in reducing executions for drug-related offenses.
On February 21, 2024, Ahmad Esmaeili, convicted of drug-related crimes, was executed in Hamedan Prison.
A reliable source informed HRANA that Esmaeili was apprehended by security forces in 2018 under suspicion of smuggling 11 kilograms of methamphetamine, leading to his subsequent death sentence.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation of this execution from domestic media outlets or official sources within the country.
In 2023, 66% of HRANA’s reports on executions lacked official announcements by judicial authorities and went unreported by media inside Iran, highlighting a troubling lack of transparency in due process. This report also reveals a concerning prevalence of executions for drug offenses in Iran, constituting 56.4% of the total executions. For a comprehensive examination of the details and statistics surrounding the executions in Iran, refer to HRANA’s report.
On January 29, 2024, authorities at the Central Prison of Karaj executed three individuals convicted of drug-related crimes.
HRANA has identified two of them as Ajamian and Jafari (first names unknown). These inmates had previously received death sentences for drug offenses. HRANA had reported their relocation to solitary confinement the day before.
No official sources or domestic media outlets within the country have provided coverage of these executions at the time of writing. The lack of official information raises concerns about transparency and accountability in the execution process.
The reports from the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists for the year 2023 reveal a concerning prevalence of executions for drug offenses in Iran, constituting 56.4% of the total executions. For a comprehensive examination of the details and statistics surrounding the executions in Iran, refer to HRANA’s report.
December 27, Birjand – Haal Vsh reports that Esmaeil Ghader Magham (Brahui), a 32-year-old death-row prisoner convicted of drug offenses, was executed in Birjand Prison, South Khorasan province.
Ghader Magham, originally from Zahedan and a resident of Birjand, was arrested for drug-related crimes four years ago in Nehbandan. He was subsequently sentenced to death by the Birjand Revolutionary Court.
Despite the customary practice of allowing a final family visitation, prison officials executed Ghader Magham without providing him with this opportunity, raising concerns about the adherence to humane practices in the execution process.
At the time of writing, no official sources or domestic media outlets within the country have reported on this execution.
According to data compiled by the Center of Statistics of Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA), between October 10, 2022, and October 8, 2023, a total of 659 individuals were executed by hanging in Iran, representing a 24% increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. Seven of these executions were conducted publicly. Many of the defendants were denied access to a fair trial and due process. For details and statistics, read HRANA’s report.
In Kerman and Karaj provinces, five inmates convicted of murder in separate cases were spared from execution by receiving consent from the victims’ families.
According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Young Journalists Club, four death-row received consent from victims’ families in Kerman Prison.
Similarly, the General Director of Alborz Prisons Organization announced that in one of the prisons of this province, a death-row inmate convicted of killing his cellmate in Hamedan Prison received amnesty from the victim’s family after 23 years of incarceration.
Dozens of Iranian people arrested at recent protests either have been sentenced to death or have faced charges such as “armed insurrection against the regime (Baghi)”, “enmity against God (Moharebeh)”, or “spreading corruption on the earth”. Charges which may result in death penalty. At the time of this writing, 2 protestors have been executed, 11 others have been sentenced to death and 47 others are facing charges that could lead to death sentences. This report provides the legal case details of 58 of these individuals.
Several arrested individuals have been accused of “leading protests” by the Judicial officials. Allegations that have resulted in charges such as Baghi, Moharebeh, and Spreading Corruption on earth.
At the time of this writing, HRANA can verify the issuance of 11 death sentences against imprisoned protestors as enlisted in this report. The other 47 people listed below are under the impending threat of death sentence.
Due to the lack of transparency in the judicial process, in many cases opened by security institutions against the protestors, the identities of some co-defendants remain undisclosed. For example, reports obtained by HRANA about a legal case over an incident during protests in the Ekbatan town of Tehran that led to the death of a Basij Militia agent, Arman Aliverdi, indicate that there are nine co-defendants. Nonetheless, HRANA has been able to identify only two of them. Similarly, in another legal case regarding protests in two neighborhoods in Isfahan that led to the death of three security forces (Col. Esmail Cheraghi, Mohammad Hossein Karimi, and two Basij Militia individuals Mohammad-Hossein Karimi and Mohsen Hamidi), HRANA could identify only 6 out of 10 co-defendants.
It is worth noting that at the time of this writing, the executions of two protestors, Mohsen Shekari and Majid-Reza Rahnavard, were carried out following an extremely quick and non-transparent judicial process, Mohsen and Majid-Reza did not even have access to chosen lawyers at their trials. Mohsen Shekari was executed in Tehran after 74 days of detention on December 8, 2022, and Majid-Reza Rahnavard was publicly executed by being hanged in Mashhad on December 12, 2022, only 23 days after his arrest.
The following enlists legal case details of 58 detainees who are either sentenced to death or at risk of receiving a death sentence.

On Wednesday, November 3, an inmate who had been previously convicted of murder was executed in Mashhad Prison.
According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rokna, an inmate, identified by his first name as Abdollah had been arrested in 2018 along with two other men and accused of murdering a 60-year-old man.
Following the completion of the investigation, the criminal case was delivered to Branch 15 of the Criminal Court in Khorasan Province. The court sentenced Abdollah to the death penalty on a charge of murder and imprisonment and lashes on a charge of stealing. The second defendant was sentenced to 25 years in prison on the charge of aiding in murder and murder planning. The third-row defendant, identified as 19-year-old Saeed, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on the charge of aiding and abetting the murder.
The defendants have also been sentenced to long-term imprisonment for previous attempting to murder and murder planning. These verdicts were upheld by branch 39 of the Supreme Court of Iran.
The most recent report of the Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) states that between October 8 of 2020 and October 9 of 2021, at least 266 citizens, three of whom were juvenile offenders, were executed and 90 citizens were sentenced to death.
As the report points out, Iran’s judicial authorities do not publicly announce over 82% of executions. These unreported executions are known as “secret executions” by human rights organizations.
Last Wednesday, October 13, three inmates who had previously been sentenced to death on drug-related charges were hanged in Zanjan Prison.
