Execution of Three Prisoners in Isfahan and Two in Ilam

HRANA – On August 19, the death sentences of two prisoners, including a woman, who had previously been sentenced to death on murder charges in separate cases, were carried out in Ilam Prison.

According to HRANA, citing Iran Human Rights Organization, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, three prisoners were executed in Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan.

According to the report, the three prisoners were identified as Abdolbaset Barahouei, 30, from Zahedan; Omidreza Ghanbarian, 40, from Tabriz and the father of one child; and Amir Farhadi, from Isfahan.

Abdolbaset Barahouei was arrested in Isfahan in 2018 on charges related to drug offenses and was subsequently sentenced to death by a Revolutionary Court.

Mr. Ghanbarian was arrested five years ago, while Mr. Farhadi was arrested three years ago, both on charges related to drug offenses. They were subsequently sentenced to death by Revolutionary Courts.

Execution of Two Prisoners in Ilam Prison

According to Kurdpa, on the same day, two prisoners, including a woman, were executed in Ilam Prison.

The two prisoners were identified as Donya Mohammadi (female) and Khodadad Mohammadi, residents of Eyvan-e Gharb County.

According to the report, the two prisoners were arrested approximately two years ago in separate cases on murder charges and were subsequently sentenced to death by criminal courts.

As of the time of this report, the executions of these prisoners have not been officially announced by prison authorities or other relevant institutions.

According to HRA’s Annual Report, in 2025 at least 2,063 citizens, including 61 women and 2 juvenile offenders, were executed. Of these, the sentences of 11 individuals were carried out in public. During the same period, 172 other individuals were sentenced to death.

Health Defenders’ Sentences Upheld on Appeal

The Court of appeals of Tehran upheld the verdict against Mehdi Mahmoodian, Arash Keykhosravi, Mostafa Nili, Mohammad-Reza Faghihi, and Maryam Afrafaraz. Previously, these individuals, whose case is known as “Health Defenders”, had been sentenced to over ten years combined and additional punishments.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, the Court of Appeals of Tehran upheld the verdict for the five defendants in the case known as “Health Defenders”.

The verdict was issued without a court hearing.

The sentences are issued as: :

  •       Mehdi Mahmoodian: four years in prison, banned from presence in media for two years,
  •       Mostafa Nili: four years in prison, banned from presence in media for two years, prohibited from practising law for two years,
  •       Arash Keykhosravi: two years in prison, banned from presence in media for one year, and prohibited from practising law for one year,
  •       Mohammad-Reza Faghihi: six months in prison,
  •       Maryam Afrafaraz: 95 days in prison.

Attorney Babak Paknia said that at a public court session, he was not allowed to attend the court even as a spectator.

The first three defendants were convicted on the charge of “creating anti-regime groups to disrupt national security and propaganda against the regime”. The two last were convicted of “membership in anti-regime groups.”

On August 14, 2021, during a meeting to make a decision on filing a lawsuit against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the government for banning foreign vaccines, nine Iranian lawyers and civil rights activists were arrested.

Two Inmates Executed in Kashan and Vakilabad Prisons

On the morning of February 21, two inmates convicted for murder were executed in Kashan and Vakilabad prisons.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting ILNA, an unidentified inmate was executed in Kashan Prison. On the same day, another inmate identified by the first name Reza was executed in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad city.

Regarding the first case, Kashan prosecutor Ruhollah Dehghani stated that “in June 2017, the defendant, age 49, killed a woman with whom he was acquainted on the Internet. Thereafter, he was arrested by the police”.

As for the second case, on September 30, 2014, Reza brought a 29 year old man injured by stabbing to a hospital in Mashhad. When he realized the man had passed away from the injuries, he fled the hospital. In November of 2018, Reza was arrested and sentenced to death.

The most recent report from the Statistics and Publication Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) states that between January 1 of 2021 and December 20 of 2021, at least 299 citizens, including four juvenile offenders, were executed. In addition, 85 citizens were sentenced to death in this period.
