Two Citizens Arrested by Security Forces in Nowshahr County

On August 2, 2023, Meisam Gholami, a former political prisoner and one of the detainees of the nationwide protests in 2022, was arrested along with his friend Mehdi Seifi by security forces in Nowshahr County. Both individuals were taken to an undisclosed location.

According to a source close to one of the families, who spoke to HRANA, Meisam Gholami was arrested at his workplace in Nowshahr County, and shortly after, Mehdi Seifi was also detained. Their mobile phones and some personal belongings were confiscated by the agents.

Meisam Gholami’s initial arrest took place on October 1, 2022, during the nationwide protests in Kabudarahang, Hamedan Province. He spent 14 days in detention before being released on bail from Alvand Prison in Hamedan. The trial session addressing his charges was held on February 15, 2023, at the Revolutionary Court of Kabudarahang County.

Meisam Gholami, 37 years old, has a history of previous detentions and imprisonments due to his activist activities.

Three Inmates Executed for Drug-Related Crimes in Hamedan

On July 17, 2023, three inmates convicted of drug-related crimes were executed in Hamedan Prison.

The Human Rights Advocacy and Humanitarian Association (HRAHA) has identified the inmates as Abbas Rahmani, Mohsen Yaghooti, and Farrokhi.

As of the time of writing, no official sources or domestic media outlets within the country have reported on these executions.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered 457 reports related to the death penalty. This included 92 death sentences, including the conviction of 6 people to public execution and 565 execution sentences were carried out, 2 of which have been carried out in public. Based on the announced identifications of some of the executed individuals, 501 were male and 11 were female. In addition, 5 juvenile offenders were executed in 2022, meaning they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime.

Ali Jahanian Arrested in Hamedan

On April 26, 2023, Ali Jahanian, a resident of Nahavand, was arrested after an appearance at the Ministry of Intelligence office in Hamedan. The agents transferred him to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on April 26, 2023, Ali Jahanian was arrested in Hamedan.

An informed source close to Jahanian’s family told HRANA, “He was summoned by the Ministry of Intelligence and arrested at their office. His family’s frequent inquiries from judicial and security institutions about his whereabouts have remained unanswered.”

Jahanian, a poet and political activist, recently published a video on social media criticizing the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei.

The allegations against Jahanian are still unknown.

 

Five Inmates Spared from Execution in Kerman and Karaj

In Kerman and Karaj provinces, five inmates convicted of murder in separate cases were spared from execution by receiving consent from the victims’ families.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Young Journalists Club, four death-row received consent from victims’ families in Kerman Prison.

Similarly, the General Director of Alborz Prisons Organization announced that in one of the prisons of this province, a death-row inmate convicted of killing his cellmate in Hamedan Prison received amnesty from the victim’s family after 23 years of incarceration.

Six Inmates Executed in Karaj and Hamedan

Monday, January 23, four inmates convicted of drug-related crimes were executed in the Central Prison of Karaj. Moreover, last Tuesday, January 19, Hamedan Prison officials executed two inmates convicted of drug offences.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, on January 23, 2023, four inmates were executed in the Central Prison of Karaj. HRANA Has identified three of them as Saman Nabi- Garusi, Abolfazl Baraghani-Nejad, and Sabina Esmailzadeh. All four inmates were previously convicted of drug-related crimes.

HRANA also reported the execution of Ali Jalilvand and Akbar Ahmadi, both married, in Hamedan Prison. Also, on January 22, another death-row inmate, convicted of drug-related crimes, was relocated to solitary confinement awaiting imminent execution.

None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported these executions at the time of writing.

Several Protestors against Water Shortages Arrested in Hamedan

Hamedan’s governor announced the arrest of 25 individuals during the recent protests against water shortages in Hamedan.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Entekhab News, 25 were arrested during the recent demonstrations in Hamedan.

Calling three last protests unlawful and the protestors the enemy of the state, Hamedan’s governor, Mohammad-Ali Mohammadi claimed, “25 people were arrested, of which 20 were not the residents of Hamedan, coming from other areas to cause a disturbance, fear and unrest.”

In recent days, the residents of Hamedan demonstrated several times against the drinking water shortages. The water transfer project was attributed as the cause, which is still ongoing. 

During the protest on August 24, the police mistreated a woman, which sparked an outcry on social media.

On Thursday, August 25, 2022, at least two protests and one labour strike took place in Iran.

The residents of Hamedan continued their protests against water shortage in front of the Mausoleum of Avicenna. During last week, they experienced repeated water supply outages.

A video circulated on social media shows the police beating a woman during the protest.

The residents of a village in Kazerun County, Fars Province, held a protest against the water disruption.

The truck drivers and truck owners, working for the mining companies, went on strike in Qorveh, Kurdistan Province. They protested against low freight fees. These drivers also face other issues such as the decrease in fuel rations and the increase in road tolls.

On Saturday, July 16, 2022, at least 27 protests took place in Iran

The pensioners of the Social Security Organization protested against low pensions in Karaj, Ahvaz, Isfahan, Arak, Babol, Mashhad, Tabriz, Zanjan, Kerman, Ilam, Khorramshahr, Tehran, Khorramabad, Shushtar, Sirjan, Ardabil, Sirjan, Rasht, Ramhormoz, Sari, Kermanshah, Birjand, Hamedan, Qazvin and Dezful.

In Behbahan, the green maintenance workers of the Municipality gathered to demand their unpaid wages.

Coming from different cities, a number of farmers active in poultry and ostrich farming held a protest in front of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

A group of interns of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences protested before a hospital in Tehran.

On Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at least 18 protests took place in Iran.

The retirees of the Telecommunication Company of Iran held protests in front of the company headquarters in Tehran, Khorramabad, Qazvin, Shiraz, Hamedan, Javanrud, Shahrkurd, Yazd, Urmia, Tabriz, Ahvaz, Rasht, Sari and Arak.

The retirees protested against low and unpaid benefits, delays in payments and not complying with recruitment regulations.

Continuing their protests against low pensions, Iranian pensioners held a protest in front of the Governor-General Building in Shush.

A group of workers of the Tabriz Petrochemical Company gathered in front of the company’s entrance to demand closing disparities in wages and elimination of discrimination.

Continuing their protests against the insufficient annual pension increase, the pensioners rallied in Shushtar, Shush, Zanjan, Isfahan, Sari, Dezful, Karaj, Ahvaz, Abadan, Khorramabad, Hamedan and Kerman. They chanted slogans against the government and called the president a liar for failing to keep his promises. In Arak, the protest turned violent by security forces.

A number of citizens, who have lost their money in the recent robbery of Iran Safe Deposit Boxes of Melli Bank, protested in front of the central building of the Judiciary in Tehran. They demanded the return of their stolen money.

On June 6, 2022, dozens of safe deposit boxes from Melli Bank were stolen by some burglars. One day after, a protest took place, which turned violent by security forces. According to some witnesses, the police and security agents used live ammunition against the protestors.
