Five Inmates Executed in Birjand Prison

On February 26, Birjand Prison officials executed five death-row prisoners, including two women.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, five inmates, including two women, were executed in Birjand Prison, South Khorasan Province.

Two of these men have been identified as Abdolhamid Sheh Bakhsh, a resident of Zahedan, and Ali Fanoodie, a resident of Birjand. In 2020, they were arrested and sentenced to death for drug-related crimes.
The identities of the three others are still unknown.

None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported these executions at the time of writing.

In 2022, the Department of Statistics and Publication of Human Rights Activists in Iran registered 457 reports related to the death penalty. This included 92 death sentences, including the conviction of 6 people to public execution and 565 execution sentences were carried out, 2 of which have been carried out in public. Based on the announced identifications of some of the executed individuals, 501 were male and 11 were female. In addition, 5 juvenile offenders were executed in 2022, meaning they were under the age of 18 at the time they committed the crime.

 

 

Detained Protestor Died in Police Station

On February 22, Ebrahim Rigi died in the custody of the police a few hours after his arrest in Zahedan. He had been arrested for the second time over protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, detained protestor Ebrahim Rigi died in custody in Zahedan.

On February 22, two police agents arrested Rigi in Zahedan and took him to a police station, where he was reportedly beaten in the police station. “The Judge of the homicide branch, a Judge on duty and Zahedan Forensic medicine have confirmed beating as the cause of his death,” Haal Vsh reported.

Nonetheless, police claimed that Rigi has been beaten outside the police station. Rigi’s family reportedly are under pressure not to follow up on this case.

Also earlier, on October 13, 2022, Rigi, age 24, was arrested over protests by security forces near his house in Zahedan. He was released on bail on January 1, 2023.

Two Inmates Executed in Sanandaj and Birjand Prisons

On February 20 and 21, two inmates convicted of murder and drug-related crimes were executed in Sanandaj and Birjand Prisons, respectively.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Kurdpa, on February 20, 2023, Moslem Moradi, a resident of Divandarreh, was executed in Sanandaj Prison. He was previously convicted of murder.

Moreover, Haal Vsh reported that on February 21, Birjand Prison officials executed an inmate identified as Davood Rakjan (aka Haj Nabi Kharkoohi), age 44, a resident of Zahedan.
He was reportedly sentenced to death in 2010 for carrying and keeping drugs.

Five Individuals Arrested in Zahedan and Khash

Security forces arrested Hamid Basham Narooie, Abdolsalam Shohlibor, Esmail Kharkoohi, Behnam Nowruzi and Behnam Safarzaie in Zahedan and Khash and took them to undisclosed locations.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, on February 14 and 15, five individuals were arrested by security forces in Zahedan and Khash, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

Of these individuals, Shohlibor was released a few hours after his arrest.

The reason for these arrests and their whereabouts are still unknown.

Two Sunni Clerics Arrested in Zahedan

On February 15, 2023, security forces arrested two Sunni clerics, Reza Rakhshani and Abduraouf Rakhshani, in Zahedan and took them to an undisclosed location.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Baloch Activists Campaign, on February 15, 2023, two Sunni clerics, serving in Makki Mosque of Zahedan, were arrested.

The reason for these arrests and their whereabouts are still unknown.

Iran Protests: Citizen with Disabilities Mansour Dahmardeh Sentenced to Death over Protests

Mansour Dahmardeh, a resident of Zahedan and a citizen with disabilities, was sentenced to death on the charge of “spreading corruption on earth.” He was arrested at recent protests.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, Mansour Dahmardeh, arrested at protests, was sentenced to death.

The verdict was issued by Branch 2 of the Zahedan Criminal Court on January 3, 2023.
Dahmardeh was arrested during the nationwide protests in Zahedan on October 3, 2022.

Two Inmates Executed in Bandar Abbas and Ilam Prisons

On November 30, 2022, Bandar Abbas Prison officials executed an inmate convicted of drug-related crimes.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, on November 30, 2022, an inmate identified as Parviz Barahooi, a resident of Zahedan, was executed in Bandar Abbas Prison.

In 2017, the Revolutionary Court of Bandar Abbas sentenced Barahooi to death for drug offences.

Also, Kurdpa reported the execution of Mehdi Lotfi in Ilam Prison on November 23, 2022. He was previously convicted of murder.
 
None of the official sources and media outlets inside the country has reported these executions.

Three Inmates Executed in Torbat-e-Jam and Zahedan

On November 14, two inmates convicted of drug-related crimes were executed in Torbat-e-Jam Prison, Razavi Khorasan Province. Moreover, an inmate convicted of murder was executed in Zahedan Province.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Rasank News, Torbat-e-Jam Prison officials executed Mohammad-Nabi Soleimani, age 31, and Abdollah Soofi.

An informed source claimed that “in June 2019, these individuals were arrested by border police while returning home with a cab. Based on false reports, the police agents arrested them without finding any drugs in the vehicle. After a few days, the police set them up with a small consignment of drugs, claiming that it belongs to them.”

Haal Vsh also reported the execution of an inmate identified as Esmail Faghirdadzehi, age 27, in Zahedan Prison on November 15. He was convicted of killing someone during a fight in 2016.

Iran Protests: Faezeh Barahooi Sentenced to Three Years and Six Months

The Zahedan Revolutionary Court sentenced Faezeh Barahooi to three years and six months. On October 3, 2022, security forces arrested her as a “protest leader” in Zahedan.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, Faezeh Barahooi, age 25, who was arrested during the nationwide protests, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

Barahooi, reportedly, was charged with “propaganda against the regime” and “chanting slogans against the supreme leader.”

 

Two Inmates Executed in Zahedan Prison

On November 6, 2022, two inmates convicted of drug-related crimes were executed in Zahedan.

According to HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists, quoting Haal Vsh, Zahedan Prison’s officials executed two inmates identified as Amanullah Alizahi and Nematullah Barahooi.

According to an informed source, in separate legal cases, they were arrested for drug offences three years ago.
 
The executions have not been reported by official sources and media outlets inside Iran so far.
